In a most spectacular (Ire lasting

residence on the hill north of the
Umatilla river known as the Dickson
house and occupied by James Johns
of the Hartman Abstract company,
was totally destroyed, says the Pen
dleton East Oregonlan. Nothing to
speak of was saved and Mrs. Johns
and the baby, who were in the house
at the time the fire started, narrowly

house work about 10 o'clock and
hearing a noise outside, went to see
what caused it, and upon opening the
door the flames burst Into her face.

There was no wind blowing at the
time and the dwelling burned for ful
ly an hour and being located on the
hill on the north side of the river,
could be plainly seen fro mevery por
tion of the city.
The residence was owned by L. Ol
denburg of La Grande and when It
was erected was considered one of
the best houses in the city, costing
about $6000. It was erected by Hal
dane Dickson about 12 years ago, but
has changed hands several times in
the past few years. Mr. Johns rented
the house from Oldenburg about two
years ago.
Mr. Johns' loss, including furniture,
bedding, clothing ' and practically
everything In the house will reach to
about $2500, with but small Insur
ance. There was a small Insurance
on the house also.
The Johns family 'went to the
home of Rev. and Mrs. Charles Quln

It is not known how the fire originated.

Two prospective games of basket
ball are talked of today ami by to
morrow it will be definitely known if
North Powder girls are coming here
to play with the local quintet, or
whether the local boys' team Is going
to North Powder.
Negotiations have been on for two
days, and the ultimatum of the North
Powder management Is that the girls
from that town cannot come to La
Grande until later In the season.
It Is possible, however, that La
Grande girls may go to North Powder
one week from tomorrow. On that
date, too, the local club boys are
very likely to play at North Powder.
These two games will be decided up
on tomorrow, at which time the North
Powderltes are to give definite an-
olnt Installation,
All members of the G. A. R. and
the W. R. C. are requested to attend
the joint installation Saturday, Jan
uary 25. The. meeting will be called
to order promptly at 12 o'clock noon.
The department president, Mrs. Da
vis of Union, and Past Department
Commander A. J. Goodbrod, will be
present and address the meeting. Mrs.
Davis will Install the W. R. C. offi
cers and General Goodbrod the G. A.
R. officers. Refreshments will be
served prior to the Installation.
