shown by the following from a Port
land paper, which says:
A most signal victory has been won
by the railroads entering Portland In
the fight they have been making for
a reduced one-nay colonist rate for
the current 'year. While the victory
Is In the nature of a compromlne. It
will mean- that there will be no stay
ing of the tremendous rush of home-
seekers to the northwest trie coming
spring, all Interests -which have been
fighting for the low rate admitting
that the $5 Increase above the previ
ous rates, wil! have no deterent ef
fect on the stream of Oregon-bound
settlers.
So far as the local territory Is con
cerned, the Hill roads are the only
lines that' opposed granting a colonist
rate this year, and when Hill forme?
a combination with certain of the
powerful eastern roatls, against the
lower rate, It looked as If Oregon had
been delivered a body blow, aa had
both Washington and California.

there wasn't a line tapping that state
that would stand up and fight for the
$33 middle west and 122 Missouri
river rates, and so strong and effect
ive was the Hill and kindred opposi
tion that the roads favoring the re
duced rate saw there was only one
hope of winning, and that was by con
senting to a $5 paster on the rate
from the two sections,, this compro
mise fixing the middle west rate at
(38 and the Missouri river rate at $30.
Tlie roads which deserve the credit
for assisting the coast states in keep
ing up their rapid rate of settlement
by eastern colonists are the following.
