Old City Council of Sumrttwr Will Hold
'' Over.
By the recent action of the Bumpier"
city council, the municipal election
held here" December 3 has been de
clared illegal, and the old council hat!
been retained In office to serve until
Its successor has been legally elected
and qualified. This course was sug
gested by Mayor L. C. Edwards after
he had received legal advice as to the
best course to pursue In order to ad
lust the tangle Into which U war
claimed the city councl'. .! got '.tself
by adopting certain pclslonB amend
ing" the c'y charter- f?e?"re (he samr
nad been ratified by the ieeai voters'.
There is some, talk of calling a spe
cial election to elect a new council In
liiiajvcr pvovUoJ ty &' city char
ter, namely, to have candidates nom
inated from their respective wards and
voted for at four polling places, as
was the case before the It election.
This, It Is now contended, cannot be
done, as the charter provides that all
candidates for city offices must be
voted for on the first Tuesday of each
December of the year, and therefore
an election held nthcrui-u nr,..i.i
again be Illegal.

Mrs. C. M. Shields, of the Shields
Fruit company of Freewater, returned
to her home last evening, after calling
on the trade In this city. Mrs. Shields
is very enthusiastic over the progress
being made In the Freewater country,
and is not only satisfied with It, but
Is purchasing land which Is being put
to fruit. Because of the early season
the fruit of this section is marketed
before that of other sections is har
vested, consequently finding ready
sale with little competition. Over 500
carloads of fruit were shipped trot?,
that section last year.
