for a few days' business and pleasure.
MIhs Edna Levy of Union, Is in the

Five hundred beef cattle passed
through La Grande .this morning en
route to Troutdale. The cattle came
from Idaho points.
J. S. Peach returned this . morning
from a week's visit st Boise. Mr.
Peach was on a combination business
and pleasure trip.
Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Hill and guests,
Mr. and Mrs. W. 8. Parker of New
berg, left this morning to spend the
day at Hot Lake.
R. C. Hiner of Spokane, represent
ing the Spokesman-Review, Is in the
city on business connected with that
paper.
The La Grande Commercial and the
Pendleton high school ' basketball
teams will meet on the Commercial
club floor in this city Friday eve
ning, January 17. There will be good
lights and everybody Is invited to at
tend.
Petitions containing the necessary
number of signatures, were filed with
the city recorder last evening, which
Insures the submission of the pro
posed new charter to the voters of the
city at the election to be held March 9
There was no council meeting last
nlEht for lack of a quorum. The
meeting adjourned until this evening.
Mayor RIchardBon, who has been con
fined to hi home for several days,
expects to be able to be present at
the meeting this evening.

to her home on account of sickness.

Mrs. O. J. Roe and daughter are In
La Grande en route from an extended
trip In the east, to her home In Enter
prise. They were met here by Mr.

ing near Elgin, arrived In the city
and has decided to remain here the
remainder of the school year. In or
der that his daughter may have the
adanvtage of the high school. Mr.
Brown also owns a fruit tract at Cove
and will return to that place as soon
as school closes.
Mrs. P. J. Thelsen and son. Arthur, I
leave this evening for a short visit In
Portland.
Mrs. Mary Drugger and son Lewis,
who have been in the city on business,
returned to their home in Elgin this
morning.
A. B. Cherry continues to be In a
very critical condition, ' but it is

tention of returning as soon as he
could pack his goods and make this
city his home.
J. Q. Clone, who has been in the

The ladles of the Methodist Aid
were entertained yesterday afternoon
at hte J. D. Glllilan home on Second
street. The ladies planned to begin
early to ptepare for their fall sale. ,
