in the city today.

Justice of the Peace Hough has moved
his office into roim No. 3 in the Ralston
building.
Mr. and Mrs. J." F.-Johnson, of"the
Spokane Cafe, have taken possession of
the McFarland nouse on Third Street
They purchased the building several
months ago.
Mr. and Mrs. C. R.Seitz left last even
ing for Sumpter where they wih make
their home temporarily. Mr. Seitz is
now in the employe of the government

Jonrathan Johnson, who will leave for
the Alberta country as soon as traffic is
resumed, arrived this morning from Baker
City and will spend the day in La Grande.
L. E. Stanley, one of Union county's
prosperous and energetic young farme's,
was i.i the city today transacting business
at the court house.
Mrs. J. T. Jackson, who was called to
tne Deosiae of hermotner at Ft. Cuiiins,
Col., two weeks ago, has returned, owing
w the convalescence of her mother.
I. J. bcroggins, who has been in the
Wallowa valley the past few days trans
acting business, returned home last even
ing. Mrs Ellswrorth and Mrs Ackles who
have been in Baker City attending the
District convention of the Women of Wood
sraft returned home this morning. They
were accompamei home by Miss Ackles.
They report having had a delightful time.
Miss Rose Harris, of Summerville
arrived in the city last evening and stop
ped over between trains with her sister
Mrs. J. W. Stotts. She left this morning
for Walla Walla where she will enter the
hospital and become a trained nurse.
Rev. A. Eades expects to leave in the
morning to spend the summer with his
sister, Mis. Wm. Gray, who is postmis
tress of Canyon City, Grant county. Mr.
Eades lived many years in that section of
the state where he has hosts of friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Harland Staoy, formerly
residents of this valley but recently at
Twin Falls. Idaho, arrived this morning
from the latter city, and went on to Elgin
where they will visit relatives. In the
coLrse of about a wetk. Mr. and Mrs.
Stacy will go to Coos bay to locate per
manently. In the case of of Carrol vs the Grande
Ronde Electery Company. Judge Smith
held that the pleading in the former case
acted as a bar to future actions. Unless
the case is appeald no futher action can
be taken. Tnis is the case wherein the
heirs of Mr Carrol sued the company for
$5000. as a result of the death of Mr
Carroll Mused by his contact with a live
wire.

Last evening was the reju'ar monthly
social even:ng at the Eastern S'.ar hall.
A pleasant evening was spent by the
members after which refreshments were
served.
Fred B. Taal was united in marriage
last even at six o'clock to Miss Emma
Gerber at the home of the groom's par
ents, with Rev E B Hays performinc the
nuptials. Under a pre'tyarranjemont of
rosis. the groom accompanied by Wiiham
Driscoll met the bride who was attended
by her sister Miss Edit:i. Following the
ceremony a delicious supper was enjoyed
by the thirty-five intimate friends and
relative s.
The groom is the son of Mr and Mrs
John G M Taal and is employed in the O
it at rx round house. The bride is the
daugl ! of Mr and Mrs John G erher.

The Methodist Giee Club and a few in
vited guests were again treaded to a most
pleasant social evening last night when
Mrs. G.C. Osburn and Miss Mabel Will
iams entertained at the Willliams home.
About thirty-five guests were present. A
series of interesting games preceded the
musical program. One of these was to
compile as many names as possible from
the word Methodist. M;ss Dickeson was
the rrost proficient, for in '.he few minutes
time alloted her. she found fifty-seven
words. Delicious chess enkes and coffse
constituted the refreshments. Then came
Miss Mertie Aldrich. and piano solos by
Mrs. A Newlin and Miss Ruth Bush.
The next club meeting will be on March
15 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo.
Currey. when Mrs. G C Carpy and the
Misses Floy and Frances Massee entertain.

Professor S. C. Sherrill returned today
from La Grande where he has been de
tained for several days with a severe at
tack of rheumatism. He is not fully re
covered yet.
N. Holverson returned yesterday from
Portland where he transacted business.
J. D. Casey will start his saw mill next
week.
The powder house at the P.C. C.camp,
which contained nearly five tons of powd
er, was blown up last Monday.
There will be a social dance in the hall
Saturday night. Everybody is invited.
