This city election ay yet warm up to
the point where the . voters may have
some amusement and - possibly some in
struction regarding the city's financial
condition and future policienow under
consideration.

The legislature having given railway
conductors and engineers 'the powers of
deputy sheriffs, hoboes, holdup men aid
al sorts of lawless persons are now sup
posed to take notice and stter .clear of
the trains in the future.
In times past the city has 'in a feeble
manner attempted to have the Standard
Oil Company's storage tank in this city
removed. Such large quantities of oil
which is constantly stored there is a
menace to the safest eilizens and
prope'rtynd ahyauJdJiB removed.
According to Lincoln Steffens this
would be the one country of all the earth
if we devoted ourselves to patriotism
with the same zeal we devote ourselves
to sin. It would be interesting to know
just what busy community Mr. Steffens
bas been visiting. ,
Our contractors are all busy looking up
the markets and condition for the rapid
assembling of '''construction material.
This is to a record building season in La
Grind! and they are preparing then
selves for the demand that will be made
upon them just as soon as spring opens
j. J. Hill, president of the Great North
er Railway,, has recently brought a hun
dred or more Southern negroes to Wash
ington and installed them as section crews
along the line of road.; It would appear
that this might be , way to settle the
labor question. The negro is here to stay;
he belongs here, and hardly any laboring
man has aught to say against ' him. By
supplanting Japanese and coolie laborers
with the big, burly, colored man, we be
lieve the trouble of Asiatic immigration
would adjust itself. The people are inter
ested in Mr. Hill's experiment with the
colored laborer, and hope rt will be suc
cessful. .Roseburg News. '
A correspondent from Creswell com
plain bitterly that the S. P. Company
has supplanted white men on the section
by Japs.' Other localities are having the
sanpe experience, which fact does not
increase the railroads' popularity nor
cause the white men to love the Japs
more. A signiflcent feature of the com
pany's action in the labor situation, is
the fact that on the more dangerous
mountain sections, where extreme care-,
fulness is necessary to insuro safety to
the traveling public, white men are re
tained, and to this time no notice of wage
reduction has been received. This fact
seems to demonstrate that the S. P.
Company has, little faith in the work per
formed by Japanese.
