PASSING Of THE INDIAN
New York, Feb, 26. From a work on
"The Indian of America", published by
Helneman today it appear that it ha
never been definitely determined - jus
what was the greatest number of Indian
in America when they were unmoles'ed.
Some authorities say the number could
not have exceeded a million, but others
assert that it could not have been more
than 800,000, and still others contend
that there were never more than 500,000.
At the present time there are about 284,
000 membere of the red race in the Unit-.
ed States. There are Indians in eighteen
different state and three territories, ex
clusive of the Indian Territory. Nearly
all the tribes are west of the Mississipp
in feet most of them are beyond the
Missouri. There are 166 reservation in
all. In the Northwestern part of New
York there are a-out 5000 descendents
of the great warrior tribe living on eigh
teen reservatione. Today there are 169
000 Indians who wear citizens dress in
whole or in part. There a e 70,000 who
can read and speak English. There are
28,000 Indian families now living in
comfortable modern dwellings. When the
Government first began nupplyrg the In
dians with houses it often proved a diffi
cult matter to keep the old warriors in
them. They would lake possession in the
best of faith, but the wild nature would
invariably break out; they would saddle
their horses and go back to their tepees j

STAPLE FIRM WOULD
(OHE TO LA GRANDt
The Jones Bros., Company o.' Louisville
Kentucky, has .nformed local business
men that it will send a representative to
La Grande by the first of April to make
final arrangements, if possible, for the
erection and installation of a modern vine
gar, pickle and condiment factory in this
city. The most promising pnase, aside
from the fact that the company is appar
ently satisfied with this site for a factory,
is the fact that the Jones Brothers Com
pany is the most staple and largest vine
gar factory in the world. The company
is capitalized at $500,000. Its original
plant was built at Louisville, and is still
operated in that city. A large middlewest
factory is located at Canon City, Colorado,
Now it want a factory which will luppiy
the growing trade on the Pacific coast.
Representative of the company have been
convassing the Pacific coast for a site
during the past year, and now comes the
announcement that they will send a man
d.rfr"f,v t thi ntu
If the right sort of inducements are ex
tended to the representative when he ar
rives, there seems little question but that
the company will decide upon La Grande,
and should such be the case, the factory
would be immediately called upon to sup
ply the demands of a trade that i now
firmly established on thie coast and grow
ing continually. It would not have to go
thru the slow process of building up a
reputation, a that reputation is already
on a solid footing.
The inducement which the company
demands, are not positively specified, but I
would doubtless be relative to a site. No
subscription to stock will be solicited.
Should La Grande be fortunate enough to
attract the firm, a plant will be installed
which will be backed by sufficient capital
and of such a capacity of output, that any
sized business which might confront it,
could be properly handled.
Last year when the Ripley-Oregon Fruit
Food Company was organized, the news
reached this company in Louisville. A
representative was dispatched to this city
to buy, if possible, a controlling interest in
the supposed plant. On that man's ar
rival he found the rumor an idle dream,
but went back to his company with the
recommendations which are now appar
ently materializing. Immediately after
that, the Eastern Oregon Colonizing Com
pany began a correspondence, which cul
minated in the letter received yesterday
making the announcement as stated.
It behooves La Grande as a unit to join
forces in grasping this opportunity of se
curing the Pacific coast plant ot tne larg
est vinegar and pickle manufacturing es
tablishment in the world. Thus would
this growing city secure anotner means
toward placing La Grande on the map as
the largest, ai.d most widely known, com
mercially, of any city in Eastern Oregon
