A ' Peter Quincc. f i ' v.' , The . enlargement of the .brickyard means a much larger payroll, this year, Atlanta .is thinking seriously of endea voring to secure the next Democratic na tional convention. The Reoorder. js having the . official ballots printed.' City 'election will soon be here. After March tlh there will be two graduates of West Point in the Senate Mr. Du Pont, of Delaware and MrBriggs of New Jersey. It has been stated that payrolls make cities.? Ir this is true La Grande will make a city. There (s not another tovn in Oregon today with larger payrolls than La Grands'. . There were some who thot the railroad would ruin this country. There are some who think a rock c.rvsher and road roller will ruin the county. Some people always Ue in the past. . , There are so many demands upon the state as Upon individuals. The appropri ations of the legislature ware B.600,000 dollare and not one cent of the vest amount to maintain an exhibit at the Jamestown exposition., There will be millions of people attending this fair and Oregon should have been in evidence. It le not too late if action ie taken immedia tely. An exhibition similar to the one the National Cash Register people of Dayton Ohio had at the Lewis & Clark fair, with pictures, could be - maintained for about 6,000 dollars and a constant exhibition of the scenery and industries of Oregon would possibly be as effective ae if we would have expended seveial times this amount hi an attempt at an exhibit. It is not too late, who will pass the hat. f-TURf POPULATIONS To .a population of about eighty-five million we shall add during the next tan years twenty million or over, giving us in 1916 a total of about one hundred five million and by 1926, or twenty years hence, one hundred thirty million. In 1931, or twenty-five years from now, our population will be about One hundred forty-five million. By 1936, orthirty yeare hence, we will have in the United Slates, not counting our insular possess- ions, about one hundred . fifty-five million people, of double our. fetal population, of nineteen hundred. Looking forward forty-four years to the middle of this century, and the boys and younger men of today will be active business men of that period, We must count upon a population of two hundred million. ' , As business grows so much more rapidly than popula tion, as the output of nearly ill manufac tured and agricultural products increases at an" ever-accelerating rate, and as modern machinery and' inventions make possible the doubling and quadrupling of man's working capacity, it is not unrea sonable to say that the two hundred mill ion people of nineteen hundred fifty should 'exceed in potentiality what four hundred million could accomplish today. Have we room for such a population without over-crowding? Can we accom modate these vast numbers and still find ample land for the farmer and natural resources sufficient for the worker in iron steel and cotton and, other industries? The briefest study on this point will turn the most confirmed pessimist into an optimist. It begins to look as though Philander C. Knox, formerly' attorney general of. the United States senator may be brought forward by Keystone State Republicais for the presidential nomination. Owing to the great mortality among infants the city council of New York has passed an ordinance 'prohibiting the sale of milk unless it has been pasturized or sterilized: Wonder if the Syrup of Figs Company has a friend in that city council IIOVY TO CURE CHILBLAINS "To eniov freedom from chilblains' writes John Kemp, East Otisfield, Me., "I apply Bucklen's Arnica Salve. Apparently very little interest is being taken in the proposition to bond the city for 160,000 dollars. This is a large amount of money and usually such a pro- i position would meet with opposition.
