The La Grande Brick Yard did an un
usually large businese last year but there
very indication that it will have to in
crease its present capacity in order to
take care of the local demand that will
be made upon it this year. There isgo
rntf to be something doing in the building

Oregon has a railroad commission. It
will doubtless require some months for
the members to become familiar with
their duties and powers. It is respon
sible position and means much to the
business Interests of the state. Etm
.Oregon should have been represented on
the board but the powers that be decreed
otherwise. '
The federal grand jury of New York
lae indicted the Great Northern railroad
for rebating eugar shipments made by the
agar trust. The published rates were
52 cents per hundred pounds but the ac
tual rat paid by the trust was 35 cents.
A reduction equal to $5.40 per ton. A
saving as stated ii the indictment of
$4,664. It is just such special privi
leges that the big shippers have . been
able to extort that has permitted them to
ruin the small manufacturer and shipper.
Mr. Stearns of the Cove was in La
Grande a few days ago to secure if pos
sible a sentiment whereby La Grande
would join with the Cove this . year in a
general Fourth of July celebration. Mr.
Stearns is president of the Eastern Ore
gon G. A. R. Association, which meets
this year in the Cove. The Pioneer As
sociation of this county has also selected
the Cove as its meeting place this year
and Mr. Stearns will try and have that
date selected whereby the Cott may have
a four days celebration. It is expected
that the Central railroad will have its
line completed by Julyand all portions of
the county can reach the Cove by rail.
The Cove is the first in the fielo and
the other poitions of the county have
given little if any consideration to the
national celebration and how they will
fall into line with the euggestion re
mains to be seen.
