Sunday was a busy day in the La
Grande Poet office. Some time during the
night previous, there were actually cords
rf Portland mail stacked up in the office,
and all day Sunday the office was crowd
ed with citizens who have been without
mail from the west for one week.
Three trains in all, managed to reach
here with Portland mail, and then it stop
ad. This morning's number six was an
nulled because of washouts along the line
to Portland. The local office is yet under
instructions to withold the sale of tickets
to points north of Pendleton and Umatilla
A train is supposed to arrive this even
rig between eigh. and nine o'clock.

Adams until recently was one of the
principal witnesses against Mover , and
the others, , He, was said to have corro

denied the words imputed to him.., f, ,

Today is China New Years. But the
La Grande settlement of Chinese will of
necessity be a very undemonstrative lot.
The reasons for this is that freight trains
have been delayed and little noise making
apparatus has arrived here. Neither
have the large quantities of Oriental !
swee's. , Should traffic be resumed be
fore the close of the ten days' period, the
end may be more noisy and demonstra
tive than ,fh opening wae. Hung Tuk
the Chinese merchant in La .Grande,
stated today that the entire ten days
would be very auiet for the reason stated.
Practically none of the shipments due to
have arrived long since, have corner i , ,
This morning s express .brought .in a
small shipment to the Ch.nese quarters
from Portland, and judging from the eag

was evidently articles of high value with;

Aekerman, superintendent of publio m
instruction for the elate o'f Oregon, has
requested the Oregon Development
League to supply the detail of lis work
and especially the facts relative to the
colonist rates to each and every one of
the cojnty superintendents thruout the
state of Oregon.
Mr. Aekerman believes that the splen
did oppoitunity afforded the people of
the Middle West to visit almost every
point in Oregon at the low rate of $25
should be put before the schools, and
that all teachers in the state should not
only inform themselves of the facte, but
impart those facU to their studente. This
rate of S25 includes all Missouri River
points, St. Paul and eontiguoue territory;
the rate from St. Louis is $S0, and from
Chicazo $33. and tickete will be on sale
from March 1 to April 30.
There is an absolute hunger for infor
ma'ion about Oregon thruout all portions
of the United States. In addition to the
many thousands that have been coming
since December. 3.750 inquiries : have
