ORIENTALS
Ernest Heater, an employee of the
O.egon Lumber company, and an un
known companion who 4iails from La
Grande, yesterday determined that it
would be a fine thing to share their joy
with the Chinese denizens of the Chiner
district nd give thema taste of th m.
I high life, by throwing a couple of them
into the icy waters of Powder river.
The men picked by the two adventur
ers in the restricted district to share ther
exurberant jay were two Chinese, Sam
Kow and Chink Fung who stood at the
east end of Auburn avenue watching the
ice cakes float up and lodge against the
irrigation dam that locks the river at that
Doint.
Heater and his friend managed to
seize one of the Chinese, Ching Fung.
who did valiant battle, but Sam Kow es
caped across the swollen river.
The belligerents failed to land the
other Chinaman in the river but eontemerf
themselves with rolling him in the mud.
