Facing graft charges that may result
in imprisonment in the penitentiary. L. E.
Tureman, a prominent Burnt River
rancher, and hia son George Tureman,
stood in the circuit court this afternoon
while District ' Attorney Lomax read the
the indictment returned by the grand
jury of Baker county charging them with
obtaining money under false pretenses:
says the Baker City Herald.
The indictment recitea that Tureman
padded their bills for road work for Baker
county, and were guilty of graft, in the
claims they had been in the habit or sus-
mittincr to tha county cflurt.
L. E. Tureman is one of the big ranchers
near Hereford, a man with much stock
..! tw.,il U ! n ff tht
prominent men of the neighborhood, and
waa recommended and appointed . as a
road worker in hia district.
For more than a year, Clerk Combs
believes it is two yeara, Tureman has
been doing road work, employing his son
to assist him, and turning in bills to the
county court of Baker county.
Whan the present county court came
into power it announced that the road
graft was at an end. If the charges of
the grand jury are true the Tureman's
failed to heed that warning.
Repeated primings of bills taught many
of the road supervisors under the old re
gime that the county court did pot pro-
NEVADA
pose to pay for value not received. The
summary removal of others from office
also conveyed the same lesson.
But in spite of these warnings, the
Turemar.s. if the charge be true, put in
bills at the October term of court which
were about $20 and $25 too great, re
spectively. The bills were allowed.
Tha muntv ecurt. however, was not
altwether satisfied, and began an investi-
oation of the bills. It was determined
that if anv eraft existed it should cease
Tha indictments are the result of the in
vestigation started by Judge Messick,
and his fellows in the county court 'or the
purpose of stopping a leak in the county
funds.
Tha matter was taken ud by the grand
ury. Prominent men from the neighbor
hood were examined by that body, and it
was determined by the members that tbe
bUI of L, E. Tureman should have been
for but $64 and the bill of George Ture
man for but $59.50 instead of $84 each.
Then tbe indictments were returned.
The witnesses examined by the grand
jury, according to the indictments, were
John M. Hufflines, J. B. King, and Byron
RuddeU.
The Turanians ware arraigned this
afternoon at 1:50 and through their at
torney Judge White, entered pleas of not
guilty. They were admitted to bail on
bonds of $600 each.
