MORMON ' SORDAY SCHOOLS BEST
In th face of th widespread hostility
that prevail toware the Mormon xhurch,
chiefly because of the doctrine of polygamy
which has been fn the past and ltelievd
by many still to be 'one of its principal
features,' the zeal of Its members,' "spec
ially in the training of the young, ha to
be admired. -'Among the' Mormons, mor
perhaps than in any other "denomination,
it appears to be recognized that th body
which makM the 'most Tf "It Sunday
School will have the greatest growth.
The lack of general interest taken in
the Sunday Schools throughout the country
is a suDject 01 sorrow ana regret to many
pastors aind 16 the ' U w Who ' r ' activ
worker in' that branch of 'church work.
Figures recently appearing in a news
paper item showing the percentage of in
crease among 'Various 'refigkws bodies
during the 1 6 years from 1 890 to 1 906
were as follows: Catholic' 7"4 r'cent;
Episcopal, 62; Lutheran, 49; Methodist,
40, r Congregational, $6; Baptist, it. th
rMormons are said to have increased dur
ing the sam period at the aniazing rat
of 107 per cent, and the raason advanced
is that they have th best Sunday School
in thecoontry. ., : .-. y
The Mormon parents make it a duty to
see that their children are regular in at
tendance at Sunday School. Among other
denominations the Subject 'appears to be a
matter of entire unconcern to a large pro
portion of the parents, and their disregard
of the Sunday School quickly descends to
th children! In the Mormon Sunday
Schools there are 40 per cent more men
teachers than womsn, while in th Oentil
churches of the land the relative propor
tion is reversed. The woman male prob
ably fully a capable teacher a th man,
but there 'would be a1 moral effect in a
larger participation of nien," Especially in
ts influence upon boys, that cannot be
questioned.
It has been estimated that BS per cent
of the church membership must b looked
for In the Sunday Schools. If the latter
are neglected, if the present adult "mem'
be r ship of th chuichet by carelessness or
otherwise discourage the children from at
tending, it is not difficult to foresee what
the ultimate result will be. Spokesman-
Review.
