So ia, Hanry Scheffer, tha Russian wrest
ler, who recently issued a challenge to
wrestle for love, money, or honor. With
out alleging that th former incident is the
cause or result of the latter fact, it might
be easily' so constructed. -
About three weeks agj Henry Scheffer
came to La Qrande and hearing of board
and room being offered by Mr Rose
Hams, went there and related a story,
that would touch the heart of any lady.
He laid: "lam without money now, but
I have a contract to paint the new saw
mill, have contracts to paint various signs
and if you. will advance my board until I
get my first pay check. I will employ your
son at a gaii sala-y to assist ma and of
course pay the board advanced. 9 I have
a phonograph at A B Heulatand a trunk
at the Blue Mountain House." ' '
Mrk Harris consented to the request
and since then Scheffer has been about
the city but if he has actually labored in
that ti ne is not definitely known.
Within the last week tjp issued a chall
enge to wrastie and had just signed an
agreement as, previously stated m this
Mor.diy morning, Scheffer waa ir. his
rooms In the Harris home and about nine
o'clock want down town. That was the
last seen of him at or near hie room.
Numner six was several hours late that
morning, and while waiting at tha depot
in company with several men, the conver
sation jrlfted to gold during which time
he exhibited a splendid gold watch and
pieces of gol dcoin. . ' ' , (
About noon Mrs Harris discovered that
her watch, a present to her and valued
much more highly as a memento than, for
ita intrinsic value, which is conservatively
estimated at fifty dollars, waa missing. ;:i
This led to a general inventory of her
jewelry which resulted in the astonishing
fact that still another, gold watch, a
beautiful thing, and the property of Ruth
Harris, and a valuable old fashioned bra
celet were missing. $125 could not pur
chase tha three articles.
Mrs Harris said nothing to the polio
but waited for the return of her son
who was I L out of tha city
nor did aha in any way connect the loas
of jewelry with the absence of the Russ
ian, whom she momentarily expected to
return to his room.
Professor Christol was the first to
make public the theft, for on learning of
the disappears ice, he quickly put two and
two together and on the return of Mr.
Harria. caused a warrant to ba made for
the Russian's arrest.
Further inquiry into the story as told
by the Russian divulges that he . had no
trunk, and of course did not have the con- '

doubt never owned a phonograph.
While he was not seen to board an east
bound train, it is more than likely that ha
did so, and the chief of police has notified
cities akbwiu, lu ..'ihcr.i hlrr. ; '
While seen at the depot Monday mornr
ing he had gold and silver, fully enough to
carry him out of the state. 1
Mra. Harris jtatcd last night that aha
of course felt the lose of the jewelry from
a cash standpoint, but all of the articles
were either presents to members of her
family or the property of dead relative;
The eighteen dollars in board money was
of course not paid and Mrs. Harris' direct
loss, caused by the untimely disappearance
of the wrestler, represents fully $160. 1
