ment and settlement of the dry land sec

Governor Jesse F McDonald of that state
ha called the -Trans-Missouri Dry Farm
ing Congress" to meet in Denver on the
24th and 25 of this month. The ca'l has
been sent to every state west of the
Missouri river and assurances have al
ready been received that delegates will
come, with state sanction, from nr.rHr..

The purpose of the congress which will
met in Denver this month is. first or all.
to form a permanent, educational inter
state organization somewhat on the line
of the National Irrigation congress, and
second, to afford a full and free discus
sion of the principles of scientific soil cul
ture, and of their development in the
west. Speakers will be present from
every state west of the Missouri riv.r
The County Court of Baker county has
appointed Jive men to represent that
community. Umatilla county will be re
presented by ten delegates, duly appoint
ei by the court of that countv. .

HAMMOCK In this city Thursday, Jan
10, 1907 Epherm Hammock, aged sixty
two years. Te funeral will be held at
Summerville, Saturday afternoon at
two o'clock.
The deceased was on of the early
pioneers of Union county, hawing arrived
here in the fall of 1865, and resided here
continuously since that date. For many
years he was known as one of the leading
farmers in this valley, but for the past
number of years has been a resident of
La Grande.' rie leaves to mourn tils
death two sisters and four brothers, three
daughters and two sons. The daughters
are: Mrs J A Rogers, of this city, Mrs
W R Grout of North, Powdr, and Mrs
Jane Ticzer of Portland. The sons, Rich'
ard and William reside in this aity. Dur
ing his many years residence in this valley
he has made many friends who will long
remember him as one always ready to
accord a hearty welcome to friend or
stranger and extend the right hand of
good fellowship alike to rich or poor.
Sy his death the ranks of that sturdy
class of pathfinders, and empire builders
has ceen reduced by one, and again we
are made to realize that "Man is of
earth and must to the earth return."
