    BOW MDIG artesian Wells
h. Interesting and instructive tn
'nets the process whereby an artesian
M is constructed. The well
'thaVhav contract for locating an
!rtXan well for the 0R4N at the
I railroad yerds, have reached a debt of
1 150 feet having been in actual operation
pseven and one half days. They are still
in the gravel-aand ttratum wh'ch they
'entered at the surface.
WMe the various strata are pliable.
the f7pmg will be a ten inch side. The
drill is about six- inches in diameter and
when it has worked its way into the ground
some distance, a pan is let down which
scoops the mud. When this operation has
increased the depth of the hole abotins.
So slow is the descent of this casing,
thatjleach time the hammer falls, there
is no perceptible drop of the pipe. 'Should
the diggers encounter a hard stratum the
size of the casing will reduce conform
with the size of the hole drilled, for ths
casing cannot be forced thru rock. As-
cording to the contract, the well is only a
iittieTnore than one tenth finished.

Summerville, Saturday afternoon at

The deceased was on of the early
pioneers of Union county, hawing arrived
here in the fall of 1865, and resided here
continuously since that date. For many
years he was known as one of the leading
farmers in this valley, but for the past
number of years has been a resident of
La Grande.' rie leaves to mourn tils
death two sisters and four brothers, three
daughters and two sons. The daughters
are: Mrs J A Rogers, of this city, Mrs
W R Grout of North, Powdr, and Mrs
Jane Ticzer of Portland. The sons, Rich'
ard and William reside in this aity. Dur
ing his many years residence in this valley
he has made many friends who will long
remember him as one always ready to
accord a hearty welcome to friend or
stranger and extend the right hand of
good fellowship alike to rich or poor.
Sy his death the ranks of that sturdy
class of pathfinders, and empire builders
