alleged merger of the Wabash. Missouri
Pacific and Iron Mountain Railroad Com
pany, the Pacific Express Company, the
American Refrigirator Company, the
Rapid Transit Company and a half score
of other western elevator and railroad
companies, was filed in the supreme co-rt
today The companies named, the at
torney general, alleges, are owned by the
same company, the Goulds, and is a vit
iation of the constitution and the laws of
Missouri.

killed, six men and one woman injured
and a total property loss of $760,000 as
a result of a fire which partially destroyed
the two million Michigan Stove Company
last evening. Two thousand men are out
of employment. The death and injuries

La Grande is 'soon to be the shipping
center for alf Eastern Oregon lumber
concerns. The Eastern Oregon White
Pine Agency, formerly of Salt Lake,, but
now removing its head office to La Grande
is to be the medium for lumber manu
factures and will ship, market and collect
for practically all the companies in this
section of Oregon.
. F. G. Scott, formerly a La Grande boy,
is reported to be at the head of the agency.
F. S. Murphey, well known in lumbering
circles in this city, originated the market
ing system but the management has late
ly been turned ever to Mr. Scott.

North Yakima. Jan 9 A train load of
coal was ra ded a' the station by citizens
who are without fuel and twenty cars
were carried off. Tne engineer started
to pull out of town when the levers cf
the false bottoms of the coal cars were
pulled out and the ccal let down on the
tracks. No trains will be allowed to pass
without leaving a certain amount of
coal.
The city has been sufferi-g intensely,
and the force resorted to. was because of
absolute necessity. There was no viol
ence but a carefully prepared system of

Thanksgiving day, when President Spenc

general disregard of principles of the block

notified to allow the citizens time to take
some of the coal to relieve immediate
suffering, but on the crew's refusal to
comply with the earnest requests of the
coal committee, strategy was resorted to

BRAKEMAN ARRESTED ,

Salina, Cal., Jan. 9. Two brakomen
on the Southern Pacific wee arrested last
evening following the holdup of Alfred
Newman and Edward Wiggins in the rail
road yards. Newman ran, but Wiggins
on resisting, was seriously slashed with a
knife, his watch and money taken. The
stolen property was found in the posess
ion of the brakemen now in custody and
it is believed that the prisoners not orly
committed this robbery, but many other
similar offences during the last few weeks.

St. Petersburg Jan. 9 General Pavloff,
chief military procurator of Russia, was
assassinated this morning while attending
a court martial ofseveral revolutionests.
A Terrorist, , disguised as a workman,
approached the general and emptied his
revolver at the distinguished official.
The assassin was captured after a hng
chase thru the streets in which he shot
forty shots, killing a policeman' and
wounding a boy. The crime was com
mitted deliberately and. showed careful
preparation. The - assassin had gained
entrance to the garden under the. pre
tense that he had a report to submit to
the military procurator. He approached
within arm's length of Pavloff and fired
seven shots into the official's body.

Reno, Jan 9 The fuel famine has'
placed this city in a state of suffering
from th$ intense cold. ' All wood in the
yards is- sold and will close down to -
morrow. The Southern Pacific yards at
Sparks have only enough coal to last
twelve hours and unless the fuel is im
mediately received, no trains will run out
of Sparks. " V -
