It is to be hoped f'at our frozen roads
will continue for a .week or more. If
they do many cords of wood will reac h
the city that will not otherwise be possi
ble. The fuel question it becoming ser
ious again.
There it nothing the matter with the
roads in Union county at the present
time. Why not invent something that
will keep the roads frozen all of the time.
But there is another drawback, what
would the newspapers do if the road
questio l was solved?
right and will soon be adjusied. If the
seaport cities have water advantages
this it their good fortune but there is no
reason why the Interior sections of this
great Northwest should pay tribute to
these centers. Their natural advantages
should be sufficient , without the aid of
unnatural influences.
The meetiig of the city council to
morrow evening promises to be excep
tionally Interesting. The report of the
consulting engineer on the Beaver creek
water project will be acted upon and it is
expected that the new proposed charter
will receive approval of the council and
steps taken for the holding of a special
election whereby the people may approve
or reject it, The people are interested
in both of these matters.
The Interstate Commerce Commission
has developed into a general publicity
bureau. It is astonishing how tome of
the big corporations squirm when the
lime light is turned on to their manner of
doing business. The fear of publicity it
one of .the great factors in keeping many
things straight The man whose life it
without tarnish or the business so con
ducted that if necessary the whole world
may know its workings, has nothing to
fear.
From this time on, with the exception
of the state printer, all officers will d'aw
flat salaries and the fees received by
such officers will revert to the sta'e,
That was quite an issue at the last state
election but the raise in salaries only
leaves a net gain to the state of about
$7,000 and if a railroad commission is
created to say nothing of several other
new boards that the legislature will be
asked to provide for, this saving will be
wiped out.

A customer of one of the c gar stores
upon walking up to the cafe remarked
upon being asked what he wanted, among
the many brands exhibited, " Give me one
of Hackman's or the Observer will never
quit hollering about patronizing home in

others realized that the way to build up a
town is to patronize home institutions. If
we would make this cur motto for the
