Haines, Jan. 8 Town Marshal J. C.
Wooley and H. Wallace, a well known
rancher of this district were in the hos
pital here yesterday, the former with a
knife wound across the left side of his
neck and the latter with a bullet hole
thro his shoulder. The wounds are the
result of a typical border affray which
occured here Saturday night, caused by
the arrest of Ed York, another well
known young ranchman.
' York came into Haines Saturday and
having imbibed too freely of "red eye"
proceeded to create a disturbance. The
attention of Marshal Wooley was attract
ed by the drunken man and York was
placed under arrest.
BAILS FRIEND OUT
Hearing that his friend had been placed
in jj.il Wallace appeared before the mar
shal and put up a cash bail Tor the ap
pearance of York in court on Monday.
The bail was accepted and York given
iUoiiy upon the promise mat .he
would immediately leave town. York
and Wallace were accompanied to the
stable where their horses were kept, by
the marshal, who was going to assist

them in saddling and getting away.
Marshal Wooley held a lantern -in
one hand and with the other reached
for a saddle. At the same instant he
was strucK in the neck with knife in the
hands of Wallace. The knife tore a great
gash in the officers heck but fortunate the
wound was not deep enough to cause a
fatality.
ASSAILANT RUNS
As soon as he struck the blow Wallace
ran down the street. He was followed
by York. Marshal Wooley recovered
from the effect of his wound and gave
chase. He raised an outcry ano was
quickly joined by his son. Togeather they
succeeded in running down their quarry,
but not until the marshal had put a fresh
wound in Wallace's shoulder, and his son
had a hot fistic encounter with York.
York and Wallace were locked up but
their injuries necessitated their removal
to the hospital for treatment York's
hurts were dressed and he was taken
back to jail but Wallace could not be
removed from his cot.
Marshal Wooly was taken to the hos
pital where his wound was dressed but
returned to his home as soon as he htd
fully recovered from the anesthetic.

and other public buildings today. Several
Democratic clubs will banquet tonight.

battle of New Orleans when Jackson
routed the British Army.
