REV. ElllS1 HEAITH IMPROVING
Rev. George P. Ellis of Athena, is now
reported as being greatly improved in
health since he went to Los Angeles re
cently. He went there but a few weeks
ago. being troubled with asthma. A letter
telling of his rapid recovery has just been
received by Rev. G. L. Hall of this city.

Jacob Riis, the biographer of President
Roosevelt, and one of the most widely
reformers and students of economic
Questions of the country, will lecture at
theFrazer on January 18, as one of the
attractions of the Pendleton Lecture
bureau. Other attractions offered by the
bureau are Maro the Magician, and Sena
tor La Follette. The date of La Follett's
ecture is April 14.
V It was the hope of the bureau to secure
W. J. Bryan for a lecture during his tour
of the west, but he will speak but three
times on the coast, according to his
manager at Seattle, Portland and San
Francisco.

London, Jan. 5 In the Lyceum Theatre
today there was a large attendance of
prominent theatrical folic including El'en
Terry Bserbohm Gree, Arthur Bonchier.
Lady Bancroft, George Alexander, and
-Crie Maude to discuss the Sir Henry
Irving Memorial question. It was an
nounced that the $15,000 required for
the monument were subscribed and it
was decided to call on the more noted
sculptors in the country to submit plans.
It was also decided to take steps to se
cure a site in Westminster for the monu

Douglas Ariz. Jan 5 The Denn mine
at Lowell is still closed and nothing has
been hears from the twenty miners who
were imprisoned when the explosion oc
curred. One was killed and one fatally
hurt at that time. The men have now
been entombed over twenty -four hours.

Since the end of the football season last
Tuesday, the girls' basketball teams of
the high school have received increased
attention, and today the management of
the girls' teams announces that next
Wednesday evening at the Commercial
Clu(. a school championship ime will be
played. Tne teams are to be designated
as the "Blues" and the "Wnites" and from
these ten players, five will be picked to
meet the Baker City five at Baker early j
in February. j
The teams of the high school have i
ben practicing more or less for some j
time but from now things will hum in the j
way of practices. A city team is like ly
to be .organized and should it, it will also
clash with the Highs. Elgin wilMikely

But few players remain from last year's
team but nevertheless, according to the
management, the school has five fast

San Francisco, Jan. 6 A telephone
operator at Pescadero'. seven miles from
Waddel Beach and fifty miles south of
this city, confirms the report that two
boats and two-rafts, bearing the name
of the Pacific Mail steamer, "Panama"
drifted ashore at Waddel Beach yester
day Boats came ashore about noon,
the rafts following several hours after
wards. . Occasionally, pieces of wreckage
would drift ashore. As the rafts came
in they bore evidence of having been
equipped with provisions and had evident-
ly been ready for landing passengers,
The place is isolated and details are hard
to get.
Tne Panama carried fifteen American
passengers, twenty Chinese and twenty
steerage and toge her with the crew, there
were over a hundred on board. The ship
left this city for San Aucondre. but it is
believed that the vessel has been caught
in a heavy sea aud met with disaster.
BOMB EXPLOSION KILLS

Philadelphia Jan 5 A bomb thrown by
an unknown hand shortly before noon,
has wrecked the Fourth Street National
bank and killed the assistant cashier. W.
Z. McLear and injured about twenty
clerks. As yet no one has been arrested.
The building iscompleteiy wrecked. Two
are dead and a score wounded. The fusal had rushed back a slight distance
dead are: McLear, the cashier, ar.d an I and hurled a bomb. A slight fire follow
unknown man called Pnorrepy. who set ed. The police immediately threw a strong

filed the complaint are not disclosed. It
i understood that the President and
Secretary Hitchcook do not believe the
charges and will give the senator the
benefit of a searching inquiry. Fifty
thousand acres near Cheyenne are . said
to be involved. The Senator is incensed
ond loudly avows that the charges are
false.
CUTTERS TO THE RESCUE
It is very likely that either the revenue
cutter CuIIock or Peter will be sent to
search fo. the Panama this afternoon.
The superintendentof the life saving crew
has received no word from the wreck or
from any station along the coast. No
light houses have been heard from. The
incident is causing much alarm due to the
probabilities that all are lost.
MAY BE UNDUE ALARM
It U barely possible that the rafts were j
washed overboard during the storm and ,
that the vessel itself is safe, for the law I
provides for rafts on all ships, equipped
with provisions. The other wreckage
gives the lie to the optimistic views and
the entire list of passengers is no doubt
drowned.

J. H. Stevens left this morning for
Portland to attend the funeral of hit old
schoolmate Frank Baker, which will take
place Sunday afternoon. Mr. Baker did
his first work in the printing which

The friendship of their youth continued

stated that Mr. Humphreys may possibly
seek another location. As he was form
erly a resident of this city ha has many

him return. The Star Planing Mill was
one of the largest operating plants in the
northern portion of the county and the
many friends of Mr. Overton, vho was
also a former resident of this city, wish
him a continuance of prosperity.

Baltimore, Md., Jan 5. There will be
a public reception and mast meeting here
tomorrow night in honor of the visit of the
Hon. Thomas Kettle, M. P., and the Hon.
Richard Hazleton, M. P., the Irish Con
voys sent to this country by the Irish
Parliamentary Party to raise funds for
the cause of Home Rule. The reception
will be held at the Maryland Theatre aft
er which there will be speeches and
program of Irish music.

contract to erect another new and mod
ern brick structure in this city for a con
siderationof $15,000.00. Miss Maggi
Mahaffy is the promoter, and specifies
that the structure shall be brick, two
stories high, and 60x180 feet and steam
heated. It will be located directly in the
rear of the Commercial Club building and
! will face on Depot street. Erection will
begin soon.
Mr. Cloncy has also erected a beautiful
brick cottage for J. H. Watson the master

MILITARY BALL
Company L., 0. N. O. has arranged for
a military ball to be given next Monday
evening in the company armory. Thomas'
orchestra will furnish the music. Ad
