The Neighborhood Club held its regular
meeting Monday. A good attendance
was present and undei tha ovmlUnf
leadership of Mrs. Turner Oliver, all
enjoyed the study of English History very
much.
The'study commenced with the King
who ruled easily. Geo. I of the House of
Hanover, and closed with the Dresent
Kins, Edward VII. A few of the imDort-
ant events dwelt upon were the South
Sea Bubble, a financial scheme originated
Geo. I, but a failure, resulting in ruin to
many Englishmen: orieincf some customs
of government which remain practically
the same today in the government of
England: the rise of Methodism and the
Wesleyslthe War of the Austrian Suc
cession and the last attemnt of th
Stuarts to obtain the throne; the trouble
with America which finally led to the
Revolutionary War; and the literature
and writers of the different periods.
Mrs. G. C. Osburn closed the Drotrrain
by giving a delightful magazine study on
borne Poets of the Lake School."
English History having been completed.
English Literature under Mrs. Geo.
Palmer will be commenced at the next
meeting .
THE RECEPTION
A most successful New Years' Recep
tion, at which the ladies of the Lyle
Tuesday Musical and the Neighborhood
Club were the hostesses, was one of the
very pretty events of the holiday week
The ladies club room and the Com
mercial Club library were used for the
the occasion, and at times the capacity of
these rooms was very much taxed, from
one hundred and fifty to two hundred
ladies and gentlemen having called durin
the afternoon.
The decorations, appropriate to the
season, were most elaborate and consist
ed of masses of boughs and trailing fes
toons of fir caught with clusters of
Christmas bells. Punch was served by
Mrs. M. K. Hall and the Misses Mjrgaret
Anson, Bertha Young, and Mabel Wil
liams. Music was furnished thruout the
afternoon by Miss Florence McCall.
Everyone present was happy of the
opportunity to greet friends on the be
ginning of the new year, and with the
general good cheer and the informality
of entertainmen. the occasion resulted in
a jolly holiday party instead of a formal
reception.

W. C. Ryder, who has been emrjloved
by the G. M. & S. Company of Elgin for
seven years, was in the citv last eveninir
en route for Boise. Idaho, where he has
accepted a position with a lumber company.
Mr. and Mis. H. E. Wilcox, of Ander-
s.n. Indiana, arrived in the city Monday
evening to make La Grande their home.
Mr. Wilcox is secretary and treasurer of
the Wilcox Lumber Company, which will
soon have a large saw mill inooeration in
this city or near here.
Geo. Strand, of Pendleton, was a visit
or in the city yesterday. He consented to
play with the pickup team which played
the highs yesterday. Mr. Strand has
been seen in the moleskins by La Grande
people before. His performance yester
day was up to his usual standard.
Mr. and Mrs. William Smith are pre
paring to return to their old home in

than twenty-five years and his many
friends are sorry to see him leave but
wish them much happiness.

FIREMEN'S BALL A SUCCESS
The Fourteenth annual Firemen's ball
occured last Monday evening with a
splendid crowd in attendance. The firemen
had taken particular pains with every
phase of the evening's entertainment.
The first thinr which irrupted t.h rtanrer
as they approached the commercial club
was a glaring head ight. attached to the
veranda of the club house. Beneath it
were the initials of the order in myriads
of colored incandescents.
In the ball room, hanging in sracefnl
curves, were scores of lanterns of various
colors. About the windows were arranged
branches of fir and in the windows proper
were bright and shining oil cans. The
combination was odd but attractive and
as the dancers glided about the perfect
dancing floor, to the strains of real music
coming from Thomas six-piece orchestra.
they invariably agreed that the firemen
have long since learned how to arrange a
nan. Later in the evening the crowd
thinned and those who rerained had the
floor to themselves, and needless to say
they made the best of it untill long after
Father Time had swept awav the old
year, and 193? had been ushered in.
. ANOTHER INSANE
Mrs. Fred Nice, of North Powder, was
adjudged insane early in the week and
taken to Salem yesterday morning.
