"MADE 111 OREGON"
In his advertisement for bids for sup
plies for the Oregon state penitentiary
for the ensuing two years, Superintend
dnt James, of the pen:tentiary, says that
goods made in Oregon will be giver, pre
ference. If every merchant in ordering certain
lines of goods for their stocks wojld be
as patriotic, it would not be long until
Oregon manufactories would be swamped
with orders and double, or treble the
present capacity would be required to
to supply the demand.
If every Oregon consumer were likewise
patriotic, it would not be long until the
Oregon label would be the most con
spicuous in the state. As it is. the Oie
gon label is about the scarcest in the
state.
This is not only true of manufactured
articles, but of products of trie soil. There
is a charm to th imported article wh en
wins ordinarily over the homely product
of our own dooryard.
Oregon must turn h:r attention nute
forcibly to Oregon interests.
There is need of a patriotic awak-M -g.
There is need of a watchword wh ch w.ll
stir up tho home pride of the state.--East
Oregonian.

Speaking of the coal famine, it is !ikci- !
that as soon as the coal mines, which are
owned by the railroad compan.es, get rid
of all their slack coal, the shortage will
end. In the same connection, it is a bit
strange that the railroads have cars to
haul this siack. but none to haul good c:al.
