MEANING Of RIB AND VERTEBRAL
"LESIONS"
Anatomy has shown how easily dis
placements of structures may occur all
along this great trunk line of vitality.
Physiology shows that the consequences
of such disturbances must be moment
ous. What if a slip of bone from its true
alignment, or a contraction and conse
quent congestion and thickening of mus
cular fiber, or even a contracture of liga
mentous tissue, should draw across these
exquisitely tender cables of blood and
nervous impulse, and hold them tightly
pinioned against a bony backj,round? A
wire will not flash its electric messace if
grounded; a hose will not transmit water
if stepped upon; nervous energy and the
the local circulation of blood will be
blockaded likewise by every abnormal
encroachment upon the tiny avenues set
apart for their activities.
Not alone do the vertebrae lose their
normal alignment very often, but the ribs
--which, remember, are movable hinges
that change their angle of relation to the
spinal axis with every breath, and, more
or less, with every movement of the spine
as in the effort of lifting burdens those
ribs are subject to frequent slips and
partial rotations within their shallow
sockets. This very common occurence,
causing the "stitches" often that we feel
in our sides, brings additional disturbance
of relationship to bear upon' adjacent
vessels and nerves. What further me
chanical mischief could be demanded up
on occasion as the condition of blockad
ing nutritive processes both to and from
the Cerebro-Spinal Axis?
THE PRAYER CHAIN FAKE
. The Prayer Chain fake, referred to by
Rev. J. D. Gillilan in your issue of yes
terday, has been going the rounds for
about a year or more. It was first sent
forth in the name of the Bishop of Illinois,
who was a mythical personage, as there
is no bishop of that title in this country,
although both the Roman and Episcopal
churches have bishops whose dioceses are
in Illinois. Lately it has been sent forth
in the name of Bishop Lawrence, the Bis
hop of the diocese of Massachusetts in
the Episcopal church. He has been
caused much annoyance on that account
and has frequently denounced it in .he
press. Who the originator is, remains a
unknown mystery. The prayer itseif is
rather a beautiful o-e, and were it not
for the threats held out for not usinir it
and the bribe offered for its use, would te
perfectly unobjectionable. 1 received a
copy some weeks ago, and warned mv
congregation about it, and told them if
they ever received cne. to put it in the
waste paper basket. Respectfully,
Upton H. Gibes,
Rector of St. Peter's Church.
