Mr. C. E. Hackman is in receipt of a
letter from his sister in Ohio, stating that
the consul of Switzerland, at Cincinnati,
had informed her that a large estate, left
them by an uncle, would be ready for
distribution upon receipt of the proper
proofs of the death of their mother. This
estate is to be divided between five broth
ers and sisters. We may expect, in due
time, to see an enlargement of the popu
lar cigar factory on Adams Avepue.

J. A. Johnson, of Imbler. was a visitor
here today.
Adolph Rebe, of Alicel. transacted busi
ness in the city this morning.
Mr and Mrs Jones of Union were visi
tors in the city last evening.
Frank Bay transacted business in
Pendleton yesterday.
Mrs Press Lewis left this morning for
Spokane to visit friends.
Press Lewis is transacting business in
Union today.
S D Clay of Lovely. Wallowa county,
is in the city and will visit friends here

J E Berch, route agent for the Pacific
Express Company, is a business visitor
in the city
Mr. and Mrs. John Ross, who reside
near Summerville. expect to start in a
few days for California to spend the
winter.
MID-WINTER RUMMAGE SALE
St. Peter's Guild having received a
number of pieces of winter clothins will
hold a mid-winter rummage sale to close
them out for v, hat they wil! fetch. Some
good bargains will be offered. This sale
will beheld Saturday next Dec. 15, in
Mr. Kilpatrick's machine store.
CATHOLIC FAIR
Supper will be served this evening.
Tomorrow and during the progress of the
Fair, lunch will be served at noon, and
supper in the evening.

SOCIETY
The afternoon Kaffee Klatch meets
with Mrs. J. J. Carr on November 14.
Miss Ona Pennington, last evening en
tertained a large number of her friends
at an ante-Christmas party. To be in
keeping with the title of the party, the
hostess had decorated the Pennington
home in evergreens, the branches in turn
being dotted with puffs of imitation snow.
The elaboratness and taste with which
the greens were arranged, made a very
pretty effect. The evening was spent in
parlor games. A prize wns offered in
one of the games, a drawing contest,
which Miss Buzzard won. Miss Myrtle
Rosenbaum received a prize for pining a
"Tale" on a mule whose namj is alleged
to be "Maud."
Late in the evening a delicious lunch
was served.
The evening passed even too quickly
and ;t wis nearly midnight before the
guests withdrew. Miss Delia Ravburn
favored tho se present with instrumeatal
