From a seat in the United States sen
ate to a cell in a jail is a change in fortune
and honor that is a striking exemplification
of the truth that "the way of the trans
gressor is hard." It is not pleasant to
contemplate this fate of Senator Burton,
of Kansas, but when a man pursues a
wrong course with the full knowledge o
all that is involved in it, the object lesson
should be pointed out as a warning to
others who may be tempted. Men have
destroyed themselves for a very little gain
sometimes. A few thousand dollars does
not compensate for such a fall and loss
as this, "A good name is rather to be
h0Sen than even great riches."

L. R Webster, county judge of Mult
nomah county, is drafting a bill which will
be presented at the next session of the
legislature, pravidinjj .'or art appropriation
of $1,000,000 for county roads. This
money, accordirg to the terms of the bill.
is to be apportioned 'in sums of $55,000
for each county that appropriates an equal
sum. There is perhaf s no bill that is to'
be presented for the consideration of our
law making body that it more worthy of
support and favorable consideration than
that which is now being drafted by the
Multnomah county judge. Good county
roads are not a luxury, but . an absolute
necessity. Every dollar invested in that
direction brings back the principle with
compound interest and marks the social.
intellectual and financial progress of the
community.
