By way of railway and marine disasters.
flood, fire, famine and mine horrors, earth
quakes and criminal violence in every
conceivable form, 1906 seems to be mak
ing the star record of the young century.
May the tide of suffering, loss and un
toward death turn with the dawn of the
new year, and give mankind surcease
from the dreary volume now encompass--
ing the world. Of a certainty, there is
always the happy old standard of the
superabundance of good to measure down
the dismal record of the year, but in the
holocaust of evil, very few of us ever
think to use it. The rule of the times, as
we have known them, has always been
that the blessings have invariably dis
counted the burdens of life, and we be
lieve most people are willing to nourish
the comfortable calculation; so, t-'ack aj
the year has been, fiere is ample of licht
and hope and pjace and comfort and
cheer, to cnunter-balance its sum of
wretchedness.
Most of the great orators of England
nH Amerir.a uteri th Bible as basis
of their style. Brougham, Macaulay,
Webster and Garfield knew the Bible
better than most ministers, says the New
York World. Lincoln" literary style was
formed largely by the study of the King
James version. When Macauly, who be
gan his literary career by learning at
three years of age. wished to acquire a
:.ew language and he learned most of
the principal modern languages he boufiht
the Bibla in that language, and his famil
iarity with it mad his study easy. Sam
uel Taylor Coleridge, the poet, said:
"Study of the Bible will keep any man
from being vulgar in point of style." Kos
sutn, the great Hungarian patriot, who
electrified American audiences by his
eloquence, was asked how he had ac
quired such a mastery of the English Ian
guage, anc replied that it was the result
of studying the Bible.

The newspaper is for everybody and
hence should publish something for every
body. If you see something which is of
little interest to you, remember that there
are others and that the entire paper is
not printed especially for you. The very
thing that is dull and uninteresting to you
may be the one thing in the paper for
some other readers. There are whole
pages in the d lily papers that are of no
interest to us, but they are to others. A
paper which contained nothing but such
matter that would interest any one or
another of us. would have a limited number
of readers. There are many people of
many minds.
