exported from that city in 1905-06. 6000
tons come direct to this country. This is
a largs increase over any previous year of
purchase of this article by the United
States. The increased demand is said to
be due to the manufacture of gramophone
or talking machine records.' It Is expect
ed in Calcutta that free alcohol will oper
ate to increase the demand for shellac,
as larger quantities will be used in the
manufacture of varnish and hats.
