These brothers were good E'ks. and
by such members is the order famous.
' I do not ay these brothers were fault
less but I do say that in each life was
much good.
We believe in that motto nf our beloved
order and have written what faults they
may have had upon the sand, where the
winds and waves, shall blot them ou
forever, and their virtues upon the Tablet
of Love and memory."
Supreme judge T. C. Ha: ley of Salem,
then took the floor as the memorial speaker
of the day. He won the rapt attention
of the audience by his assertion that as
he alighted from the train yesterday
morning and saw the beautiful valley and
.he picturesque hills, he was proud that
ie was a son of Union county; later when
he saw the evidence of La Grande's pros.
parity, he was proud that he was born in
La Grande. Judge Hailey was born in

His address was exceedingly instructive,

and have set apart this day when we
meet each year to commemorate the lives
of those who have gone before. The
physical forms of our brothers are but
their temporal bodies which soon vanish
iway and they are ;seen no more; but
the deeds and the words of their lives
ara their spiritual and eternal beincs
which live forever and ever. Our lives
are our best and only enduring monu
ments and we should be careful how we
build them. None of us can live forever
n the body but'all offus can live forever
in the hearts and'miuds of those we leave
behind. Charity .'or the dead is a splendid
virtue, but if each of.Jus shall exercise
charity for the living we shall need no
charity when'we are dead.
This is notour lodge of sorrow where
with bowed heads and aching hearts we
lay away theearthly forms of our brothers
who have 'solved life's problems We
C3me not hcre'tojmourn. The cares and
burdens of Jthis world trouble them no
more, then why shou!dwe sorrow when
they are at rest. They are not lost or
gone, onlytr-eJ frail '.tenement of their
earthly existence'hasjpasstd away, their
spirits ar.d the influence of their 'lives are
wth us stiil and we can keep them with
us forever.
"Let us then repice in their lives and
learn the essons of hope and usefulness
that every life shcu!d teach. The great
lessen cf every Jife is action, unceasing
action. V hen action end6. life ends."
"Life s action, life is duty. Ail around
