The realistic saw mill scene in "Uncle
Josh Spruceby" the down East play,
comes nearer to the genuine article than
any of the many stage effects now before
the public. In fact, so real is the 36 inch
buzz saw, that one of the actors of the
play had hit right hand cut off at the
wrist during a performance last season
in Illinois.

effects. "L'ncle Josh Spruceby" lays
claim to one of the most novel scenes of
any piece on the road this season. A ful
and entirely practical saw mill is placed
upon the stage and appropriate scenery
is used to' make a supe ior stage picture.
When the neroine is rescued from her
perilous position at the climax of the act
the hearty applause gives evidence of the
appreciation of this acme of stoge real
ism.
The patrons of Stewards opera house
will be entertained Tuesday, Nov. 4, by
the big comedy production. "Uncle Josh
Spruceby." This popular play comes
well recommended and will no doubt be
received with enthusiasm here. The
piece is staged with every attention to
stage realism. All the scenes are well
mounted ar.d acted. The startling saw
mill scene is said to be a masterpiece of
of stage mechanism. Many specialties
are introduced and the superb solo orch
estra carried by the company all go to
make this s very delightful production.
THE THEATRE FORGOTTEN
To those who have followed the career
of the great rural piay "Quincy Adams
Sawyer" to the extent of witnessing a
large number of its performance, the
most notable feature of the drama is the
power that certain of its scenes exert
upon the audience in compelling illusion
Especially is this true of the famous
husking bee scene, in which the color and
humor of the rural festivity are so vivid
ly presented as to make this portion of the
performance an example of the art which
conceals art and hence perfect.
The players in this merry scene are so
thoroughly in sympathy with it. their
pranks and laugnter are spontaneous, the
little details supplieu in the stage settings
are bo perfect, that as the scene advances
the aud.ence gradually enter into the
spirit of the situation and forget
theatre. The heated spirit of the atmos
phere of the playhouse is dissipated and
from the natural simplicity and life-like
,cha m of the merriment there sweeps
over the spectator that perfect illusion
which comes but seldom from stage art.
Thjfootlights disappear and the actors an
one side and the lookers-on upon the other
seem to mingle in wholesome enjoyment.
At Stewaid's opera House on Friday
Nov. 30. there will be few in the audience
who will not find the husking bee scene a
perfect realization of the geniuine article
