Mrs. Walter Reed, the' most popular
and famous contralto in Oregon, assisted
by the talented tenor, Arthur Alexander
also of Portland, is soon to give a recital
in this city, provided that the movement
which has been set on foot by local musi

who are active members of the Lyle
Tuesday Musicale, have taken the respon
sibility upon themselves of bringing this
talent to La Grande. In order to bring
this talent here, a guarantee fund of one
hundred dollars must be on hand, also
sufficient money to pay the expense fiom
Portland to La Grande, making all told
about one hundred and sevanty-five
dollars.
Mesdames A. L. Richardson, whj stud
ied under Mrs. Reed, Fred Shi'ke, and
J. J. Carr, are the promoters of this
scheme, and to make it a certainty they
will personally convass tho city to make
certain the number of people that will
buy tickets at 50. 75 and Sluj (i
enough tickets are promised to guarantee
the required amount, a date will be de
cided upon and the recital will then be
forthcoming.
This date will be sometime in the early
part of December.
Mrs. Reed is a cultured talent, whose
services are in great demand in Portland
and other coast cities. Baker City and
Pendleton have listened to her tinging
and the press was full of fa.'orable com
ment. She was musically educated in
Europe. Mr. Alexander is also a student
of Paris best teachers, and hit tenor
voice is extremely pleasing.
The ladies of this city who have inter

tomorrow, regardless of wind and snow ,
and may their efforts prove fruitful. Should
they meet with success, the date will be
announced within a few days.
