PURELY VECETA5LE
This wood and coal question in La
Grande has reached a serious stags, al,
the mors so in view of the continued cold
weather.
For three days the four wood and coal
yards of this city have been as barren
of either these two necessities of lift
as one could well imagine. G. E. Fowler
has a representative in Kamela and other
mountain points, working like a Trojan to
secure a supply of wood. He may be
able to get the wood without much dif
ficulty, but the big trouble is to get it
transported to this city. Mr. Fowler
has no idea whan it will arrive here, but
he is doing all that can be done to supply
the city, and it is now up lo the O. R. &
N. to furnish ths transportation
medium.
LITTLE WOOD FROM HILLS
The Old Town Store, which gets much
Of its SUOnW from thm nirhS rrir hi!!,
has not had wood for sals for several
days, and will not have until the roads
down the mountain sides improve suffic
iently to allow hauling. The store's
manager, like all other dealers of the
city, says he has an abundance of coal
ordered but is ignorant as to the time,
required for the railroad company to gat
here.
Mr. Haggerty and J. H. Childers are
tearing around town like mad, trying to
locate wood and invent some scheme!
whereby it can be brot to La Grande. i
SOME HOPES FOR WOOD
While there Is a serious ' wood iamine 1
in La Grands today there are still hopes.
With large quantities of wood tying ready
or shipment at Hilgard and Kamela
here are a few chances of some of it
reaching this city. All the wood dealers
of the city seem to agree that the O. R.
& N. will see fit to furnish a few cars to
transport this much needed wood, this
week some ti me.
The last wood went at $6.00 and $7.00
a cord.
With the coal question it is different.
It is up to the railroad company. When
ever they get good and ready to haul
coal into La Grande we will have fuel,
but tint'.!! they v. ,,!! u, tw
for something to keep our offices and
homes warm.
An O. R. & N. representative was in
the city yesterday and made many glow
ing promises of what his company would
do to relieve the conditions, immediate!
However these promises have been heard
before and cannot be used a criterion as
to when coal will arrive.

New York. Nov. 21 Mr. Albert N.
Lythgoe, curator of Curator Egyptian
Department of the Metropolitan Museum
of Art, sailed today for London, on the
Baltic, where he will purchase equipment
for his proposed excavation works in
Egypt and the Nile. It was estimated by
the Museum authorities quite recently that
if the present activities in exploration in
Egypt continued, the Egyptian rarefies
will be fully exhausted in about fifteen
years, so it was decided that American
development of the Egyptian field should
be at once commenced. Funds have been
