It is quite apparent that a bill will be
introduced in the legislature to put the
state printer on a flat salaay.
The city council of Pendleton revoked two
saloon keepers license during the past
week. Walla Walla did likewise a few
weeks ago.
"Shirt waists one-third off'is an adver

Buffalo paper. Shocking but it must have
caused a rush of men to that store.
Mr. Hearst says that he is never to be
a candidate again. He is right. He never
should have been. He can do much more
with his large papers than he can by be
ing tied up to the detail work of any office.
The question is will he do it.

Tomorrow evening the council meets to
hear the report of the Beaver Creek
water project to be submitted by City
Engineer Pickier. The new city charter
will also be presented. It will be an un
usually important session.
The board of control of the Washington
penitentiary is seriously thinking of doing
away with the lock step and stripes, li
is a barbarous and antiquited custom.
Oregon several years ago abolished it. our
convicts now wear a gray uniform, and
other states have done likewise. R d
discipline is necessary but it is only a
question of time when all the states will
'abolish the degrading lock step and stripes.
The following are a few t'hots from
Editor White of the Emporia (Kan.)
Gazette:
"1 he man who buys his goods of a
mail order house and expects his neigh
bors in Emporia to buy goods of him, or
buy labor of him, or to buy professional
service of him is economically a leech.
He is sucking industrial blood out of the
town and gives none back. Hes ends hi I
profits out of town like a Chinaman, and
has no more right to a standing in the
community than a foreigner. We are all
neigbors industrially in this town, and the
man who sends away for his goods is not
one of us. He is of another industrial
system, and deserves ho man's support
in Emporia.
"The fact that this ?s economically
wrong is recognised by the mail rder
houses themselves. They -pretiect (heir
costomers as theives by offering to keep
people from tthbwing Where the goods
were purchased by having no "tags" on
them. Theylsay 'in their catalogue that

of an tirticfe, it is wrong to buy the article
at the.1 fclace. Only a man who steals is
a mai who is ashamed to say where he

thrng as "tainted" dry goods, "tainted"
groceries and "tainted" furniture. All of
such articles that are not purchased at
home, of men who befriend you, of men
whom you owe your living, ore "tainted"
because they come unfairly.
"If you want to support your fellow
townsmen, and want to except it without
a blush, buy at home whenever possible."

Probably you haven't had any trouble for several
