THE WONDERFUL SOMETHING
There's a Something that maketh a
palace
Out of four little walls and a Draver:
A Something that seeth a garden
In one little Mower that is fair.
That tuneth two hearts to one purpose
And maketh one heart of two;
That smiles when the sky is a gray one
And smiles wnen tne sky is blue.
Without it no garden hath fragrance
Tho' il holdeth the wide world's
bloom;
Without it a palace a prison
With cells for banquetting rooms;
This Something that halloweth sorrow
And stealeth the sting from care:
This Something that maketh a palace
Out of four little walls and a prayer.
Maurice Smiley.
Speaker of the House, Joseph Cannon,
has just been electel for the l?th time
to congress.
.The following statement from Mr.
Hushes during the period when there
was a possibility of a reversal in the re
turns shows him to be conservative.
"I am very much gratified if I am
elected, as now seems to be the case, but
I am not accustomed to speak in detail
upon matters about which there may be
any uncertainty. . . .
"I understand, however, that my elec
tion is pretty well assured, but whatever
my plurality may .be, my feeling is not
one of elation, but of responsibility. That
is all that I care to say at present."
DISTRESS IN LONDON
There is a large amount of dist'ess in
East London at the present time, and
the prospects for the winter are gloomy,
says the London Times. Trade in the
docks is very quiet, and there is only
little doing in the building line. The
question of dealing with pauperism the
coming winter is an anxious one for the
public boards, who talk of reopening
stone-crushing yards. In Woolwich bor
ough where there is also much poverty
the distress committee p:ans the emigra
tion af hundreds of men during the next
few months.
The city now has a regularly designat
ed pound and stock owners should govern
themselves accordingly. It is the same
location as formerly used.
It is possible that Henney may return
to Oregon in December and resume the
land fraud cases.
The election, if it means anything,
means that the policy of Roosevelt is en
dorsed and will be continued.
The farmers generally are delighted
I j with this rain, tho beat growers were
' 1 not all quite ready.
The next meeting of the city council
which will meet two weeks from last
night will be an unusually important one
as Engineer Pickler will have completed
his report which among other things will
give his estimate of the cost and con
struction of the water supply from Beaver
creek. The special committee who have
the new charter under consideration will
present their report.

Germany and Japan have made good
use of tne idea, first suggested in the
United States, of equipping ships with
products for sale abroad and sending the
vessels to the ports where trade might
be developed. In that way, according to
a report transmitted by Consul-General
Michael, Japan got her first order rrom
the Argentine Republic, with which she
now has considerable trade.

It would be nothing but justice for
councilman of this city to receive some
enumeration for their services. Few
people realize the amount of time that is
required of a councilman. Not only one
or two midnight sessions each month but
the committee work, which is by far the
greatest time consumer. However th
revenues of the city are not sufficient to
increase our present salary list, neither
do we presume that the present council
,j & cons.der such a proposition.

Cooking stoves are little used in Scot
land, where the cooking is done over an
open grate fire. Scottish housewives are
not easily converted to the use of a
range, but an enterprising stove rnanu-
facturer would find in Scotland quite a
harvest in time, according to reports
from those who have investigated the
question in that country.
