Washington. Nov. 5 Commander Wm.
P. White who is in charge of the recently
established recruiting station in Cleveland
reports that he has not secured as many
men during the past month as he had
hoped. Commander White attributes the
falling off in naval and military recruiting
to the better conditions of labor.

formation, a screw tail, beautiful eyes
short and wide muzzle, his front is very
fine. His head is a study, has character
and shows it in every movement.

actor of no mean ability.
He appears on the stage as "Danger"
in the play tonight.

at his heels. While here the dog made

Alleghaney, Pa. Nov. 6 No less than
6,000 plants and 120 varieties were
exhibited at the chrysanthemum show at
Philips conservatory today. There was
also a splendid selection of begonias and
orchids. Visitors were shown the Bently
a new pink shell chrysanthemum of
great beauty and variety; two new rare
specimens of purple orchids and two new
pink and white varieties of begonias.
GOVERNMENT OWNERSHIP

Yakahama Nov. 5 -In accordance with
the bi 1 passed by both houses of the diet
in March last the Government today has
taken overthe six .nva'e railroads in the
country. Tne aggregate sum of the pur
chase amounts to $125,000,000. In tne
future all railroads will be built and con
trolldd by the government.

WATER IS SCARCE.
Because of the very long dry. spell in
eastern Oregon and the heavy traffic on
the O. R. & N.. the railroad tank at
Kamela is now dry and that mountain
village is threatened with a water famine.
Almost the entire town is supplied
from the railroad tank and this tank is
supplied from a well on the summit of the
mountain. Owing to the fact that there
hs been but little rain this fall the well
is almost dry and orders have been is
sued to all trainmen to not take water
there in passing over the mountain.
The O. R. Si N. company is .making an
effort to purchase a tract of land at
Kamela belonging to Mrs. E. Swauger,
and if the purchase is made a deeD well
will be sur.k there and an adequate water
supply secured.
