A MERRY HEART
I'tfO tullUli Willi tlJO llicil L'lU Wul'lU lias UIU99I3U,
And I've toiled with the men who failed;
I've toiled with the men who strove with zest,
And I've toiled with the men who wailed.
And this is the tale my soul would tell.
As it drifts o'er the harbor bar;
The sounds of a sigh don't carry well,
But the lilt of a laugh rings far,
If you would be heard at all, my lad,
Keep a laugh in your heart and throat;
For those who are deaf to accents sad
Are alort to the cheerful note.
Keep hold on the cord of Laughter's bell.
Keep aloof from the moans that mar;
The sounds of a sign don't carry well
But the lilt of a laugh rings far.
Strickland W. Gillilan.

Very flattering reports come from La
G'ande on the success of the beet sugar
plant. There are plenty of Lane county
people who would take pleasure in buy
ing Lane county sugar. Eugene Register.
Congress meets next month, but until
next March, Senator Fulton will be Ore
gon's only active representative, in either
house. It will be gratifying when we
once more have a full representation in
both houses.
Thirty-four states hold their election
tomorrow. As this is considered an off
year, the results will effect national issues
only, as they may effect the political
status of the lower house of Congress,
should the present Republican majority
be materially reduced.
Whether or not the tip is well founded,
it is reported that Governor Chamberlain
will appoint Judge Eakin's successor on
or before December 1. in order that the
appointee mny arrange his private matt
ers before going on the benrfi. There
was no intimation, however, as to who
would he the recipient of the honor.
