MRS. VEST IMSANE
Mrs. Cora Vest was adjudged insane
this morning by County Judge Henry and
will ba committed to the asylum as soon
as possible. While she is not ferocious,
she has lost all her faculties. During the
approach of insanity shs was frequently
seen at the depot and invariably her
little fivt-yeaigj dujh'jr was the
obje;t of much comment .because of the
extreme beauty the little tot possesses.
The maniac imagines that someone is
going to take the little child from her.
When Mrs. Vest is incarcerated the little
girl will be dared for by relatives of the
demented lady.
J. J. Miller of Union was a county
visitor today.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe McCrary left this
morning for Baker City to visit fr iends.
Rev. B. F. Meredith returned to Elgin
this morning and will remain there over
Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Aikine leave in the
morning for Jackson Michigan to visit Mr.
Hikine.s mother who is seriosuly ill.
S. R. Haworth has returned from Wal
lowa county where he has a contract for
a large stone building.
Miss Elizabeth Fowler left yesterday
for La Grande Ore., where she will spend
the winter. Walla Walla Union.
A. R. Huffman and Joe Martin of Jos
eph transacted business in the city last
evening.
M. E. Imhaus of Baker City is in the
city and contemplates a trip to his mining
interests up the river.
Mesdames R. E. McDowell and J. W.
Hampson of Telocaset visited in the city
this morning.
Mr. and Mrs. Geo. B. Small and daugh-
tor nazal returned to Batter Oity
this morning after attending the funeral
of Miss Bessie Henry.
H. C. Davis, the Flora photographer
visited, in the city last evening and went
to Imbler this morning where he will
transact business for a few days.
Dr. G. W. Biggers the pioneer phy
sician of La Grande is in the city this
week on a business trip. He may possi
bly locate in Pendleton for his heallu, on
account of the mild climate here. Dr.
Biggers has practiced in Union and Baker
counties for over thirty years, but has now
retired. Pendleton E. O.
O. E. Grider, brother of Mrs. Mollie
Buck and W. T. Grider left on the morn
ing train for the east, He will stop at
Denver and many other points, visiting
relatives, then ho will go on to '' Colwell'
Kansas to visit his parent's whom he has
not seen in sixteen years and he expects
to return to La Grande about the first of
February. ',
H. H. Staniels, has purchased Mr.
Jarman's inteist in the paint and paper
hanging business of Staniel and Jarman
and will continue the business. Mr.
Staniels will personally conduct the
business and he has had years of practic
al experience he is in position to turn out
strictly high grade work As a sampl e

ing elder of the M. E. Church will leave
Monday for Long Valley to accept a
regular charge. Mr. Jasper is a man of

The La Grande lodge of B. P. O. F.
number 433 last evening initiated several
candidates and enjoyed themselves with a
spread that only Elks can prepare.
Those who were initiated are Howard
Campbell of Wallowa county. G. Young
and J. M. Allton of Hot Lake and Charles
Weitsell of this city. Those who attend
ed from out the city were: Dr. Phy of
Hot Lake, Chas. Halgarth W. E. Zelle,
John Goff, Mike Nelson Dr. Whiting of
Elgin.
The lodge has decided, commencing
with a week from Saturday night to give
a weekly social to lodge members, their i
families and sweethearts.

There is no question but that the public
school library fund will ba greitly in
creased. Last night the Pixies given by
the school children under the direction of
W. A. Milne, packed the opera house for
a two hours entertainment that was thuro-
ly enjoyed by all. Think of it, over two
hundred of our own Kirls and boys prettily
dressed, many in customs, on the stage at
once. In choruses, solos, and drills, the
execution of which was simply amazing
when it is considered the short duration
S'nce its conception.
Favorable comment is heard by all who
attended and as there will'ba two more
performances, tomorrow evening and the
matinee tomorrow afternoon, there will
be verv few in the city who will not at
