AMUSEMENT
A GREAT MINSTREL SHOW
Beach & Bowers' minstrels struck a
popular chord at the Lyceum last evening.
The troupe was greets by crowded
house, and gave tle audience just what
it was looking for, a bright, clean minstrel
show, with first class music, and some
unusually good specialties. The program
was not exactly the stereotyped minstrel
show program thruout. but the . features
that tend to give minstrel shaws theii
undying popularity were preserved and
others added. The orchestra was one f
the strongest musical organizations that
has visited the city during the winter
and the vocal numbers were exceptionally
good. Jokes were not as numerous as n
some shows, nor were they as old. Thi
contortionist was a wonder, and the trick
bicyclist discounts the best of circus per
formers. Beach and Bowers" will probably vis t
this city later in the season and they cin
rest assured of another good house

This play is not only a mirthful master
piece whose success has been at once
extraordinary and perenial, but the only
genuine one of its kind; its many imitators'
being comparatively undeserving of con
sideration. Moreover the human nature
with which it so brightly and mirthfully
overflows, appeals irresistibly to the most
emphatic appreciation and the risibles of
people of every condition and age. so
much so that the shrill laughter of Young
America is mingled with the deep guff
haws of Uncle Sam's gray-haired sons.

A CAPABLE CAST
"A capable cast, a play well staged
and a pleased audience" What sums up
the perfoimance of "The Convict' Daugh
ter." which wa presented at the Colum
bia theatre yesterday. With one excep
tion, that of the thrilling escape from
Sing Sing, sensational features are al
most entirely lacking, but the play abound s
m heart interest.
George J. Elmora a "Weary Willie"
easily holds first place. He it the cen
ter of attraction when on the stage and
his rendition of a difficult part deserves
the applause that greeted him. Wilbur
Christy in the heavy role also does good
work. His acting is consistent and is
one of the pleasing features of the per
formance. Thomas Richardsen as Colonel Gould
is a dignified southern gentleman of the
old school, who handles his part in a
way to win approval. Miss Evelyn
Nicholson in the title role is called upon
to do a great deal of strong emotional
work, and is not found wanting. The
balance of the cast is capable and the
play an enjoyable one. Spokane Chronicle
