HAS HO SUBSTITUTE
FROM TNTERTAINMENT TO LIBRARY
La Grande is on the verge of having a
library to which the public may have ac
cess to borrow and return books, once a
week. Four years, now, Prof. Hocken
berry has labored industriously to ac
cumulate a collection of the best books,
and well has he succeeded, too. But the
present supply will not warrant the open
ing of a library. anJ due to this fact the
school management is trying hard to
make the entertainment to be given this
week, a success. If the proposed enter
tainment is a success, enough additional
books can be purchased to warrant the
proposed library opening. Fifty per cent
of the net funds received through this
source will be used by Prof. Hockenberry
to supply the lacking quantity of books.
Hence it behooves La Grande to attend
these two entertainments. The primary
reason, is not to donate generously to the
stranger within our gates who
the repairs of the fountain under way, it
might be a good pian to remove that relic
of the dark ages wh eh for a t'tne served
the purpose of a street light. Now that
the arc light is in place there is no Linger
any necessity for this old style lantern.
HELP THE PUBLIC UBRARY ALONG
Take advantage of the opportunity
offered to secure the benefit of the public
school library. There are hundreds of
books at your disposal, but it is not nat
ural that we should receive anything
for nothing. Put your shoulder to the
wheel and render some assistance. The
effort will not cost much, but the benefits
will be far reachin" and permanent.

San Francisco is planning tohold a
great world's fair in 1912. The Pacific
Coast states are just beginning to realize
that important events happened on the
Pacific Coast one hundred years ago
worthy of celebrating. Oregon led the
way with the Lewis and C ark in 1905,
Washington comes next w th a big fair
at Seattle in 1909: British Columbia fol
lows with a fair at Vancouver in 1910;
then comes California in !9'.2. Can't
Idaho and Montana dig up a good cause
for celebratirg?
