and gone with their production of Parsi
fal and La Grande has seen a really and
truely great drama. At the appointed
hour the curtain rose for the first act and
the crowded house settled down for three
hours of entertainment. After the usual
introductory lines Parsifal appeared. This
character in the hands of Mr. Connor
was above par. Parsifal as pictured in
the script ss an ignorant, kind hearted
shepperd, who had lived in the mountains
ith no other human companion than his
loving mother. Those who have read
this prelude in the translations to the
English no doub: marveled at the skill o
the writer and translator, but even tna
was weak compared with the first glimpse
that the audience got of Parsifal last,
evening. Perfect of physique, cariying
his shepherd's staff, his every facial li .-
ament told of blissful ignorance.
His voice too, was excellent and during
the entire performance there was not a
syllable that escaped the most remote
listeners. The troupe carries three or
perhaps four artists: The three are Par
sifal, Kundry and Klir.schor, but the
fourth who is nearly on a class with the
three is Titurel the Ca pad ocean king and
the original protector of the holy spear
and grail. Kundry as the tool of Klins
chor. certainly was a .pleasing personage.
Her beauty and she was beautiful, made
it a short task to pull the newly annointed
king and holy grail protector from his
knighthood to the plane of a common
warrior and king. Especially in the se
cond scene of the third act, did she excell.
And Klinschor. Here is a part that takes
ability, real ability to carry. When every
effort of he and his toot has failed to
tempt Parsifal, and the comrade of tatan
had called upon all his uncanny spirits to
to assist him in his one great ambition, the
the audience suddenly saw some great
acting. ' Not the light kind that causes
the gallery to h- ot in derision, but some
heavy work that fanned (he already
weird feelings of the spectators to a ten
sion that can only be duplicated by the
chaldron scene in Macbeth. The elec
trical effects were mysterious but lent the
desired effect.
The drama is too long to properly por
tray three hours. Then too the scenery
was abbreviated because of unsufficient
room. Because of this abbreviation both'
in scenery and actual running lines the
audience was of necessity forced either to
guessed at the minus chain of the plot or
resort to recollections of former reading.
Because of this shortage the connection
of the holy grail to the holy spear was a
mystery to many. In the original, the
holy grail for which knights have searched
since the time of creation of Knights
was in the possesion of this little band
mythycally located in the Northern Spain
The or.ly defense other than their right
good swords that these knignts had to de
fend the coveted cup, with was the holy
spear. With the spear in their possession
the defenders were' invulnerable. Klins
chor. a reoresentative and comrade of
the devel ;hru the medium of Kundry
secures the holy spear and flees. Pars.-
fal a "guiless fool" and shepherd comes to
the scene willing to carry the sword of
the good knights and assist in the search
for the stolen spear, for without it, the
grail was in constant danger. After ten
years of wondering he overpowers the
temptations of Kundry overpowers the
will and physical power of Klinschor, re
turns to the grail and ultimately fulfils
the prophecy that the littie band would
be ruled by the guiless fool.
However there was a feature of the
play that was more humorous than any
thing else. The word Parsifal naturally
recalls to one, a thot of Wagner s wonder
ful overtures. However withall just dues
to the ability of the orchestra present
to disperse better music. Tne tension of
the crowd .was lot down suddenly, after
the close of the third act. by a renditio:
of "Goodbye Dolly I Must Leave You"
and a medley of other ragtime songs.
