In reading and studvina the vast immmt
of matter that has been written upon the
tubject of "Par8ifal,"one cannot but ob
serve how often the word "fool" anDear..
as applied to the hero directly, as well
as to other characters that may be con
sidered from the same point of view.
Perhaps the earliest story of the entir
group of the Holy Grail legends is an
Old Celt narrative styled "The Song Of
The.Great Fool." In this old writing we
are told how, when one brother killed
another, he afterwards slew a wild beast
and dressed himself in its skin. He then
caught a wild horse and rode away to
the castle of his wicked uncle. When
asked his name he simnlv anaw.nui
Great Fool." He proved himself far
from being a fool, for we are told that he

other brother whom the uncle had killed.
The "great fool" of this ancient poem is
the original "guileless fool" in quest of
the Holy Grail. We see in Wagner's
famous drama that Parsifal is alluded to
by Kundry as a "fool." and later as the
"stainless fool." But the modern sigifii
cance of the word "fool" is far trom be
ng applicable to "Parsifal" and not i n
ended in that sense of the word. It
would be more correct in its intended
meaning to use the expression "guileless
innocent. ' Harsilai was reared . in per
fect innocence. It was evidently the
intention of the author to illustrate that
"innocence" was the most acceptable in
the sight of God. "It was the Lamb of
God who took away the sins of the world.
It is the child that is most readily taken
into the Kingdom of God." In this quo
tat'on we see the names "lamb" and
"child" as embodying all that is meant by
"innocence"

the productions of the Stewart opera
company, whice comes to the Stewart
Opera house tomorrow night and Satur
day night, can fairly well be estimated by
the fact that it requires three large bag
gage cars to accommodate the massive
secenic, and elaborate costumic equip
ment used in the presentation of 'The Two
Roses" which will be given on Friday
night, and "Dor thy" will be presented on
Saturday .tight. These productions are
identically the same as were used during
the presentation of these operas at the
Broadway theatre. New York City, and
which will be seen in all their entirety
during the engagment here.
