Cities who think they have a grievance
on account of excessive railroad rates, are
applying for relief. Wonder how long it
will be until Grande Ronda valley wakes
up to the fact that we are paying an ex
cessive rate when we pay the regular
terminal rate from Chicago or other com
mon eastern points to Portland and in ad
dition thereto the local rate from Portland
back to La Grande. We certainly are a
patient people. Spokane did not wait
twenty-four hours before she filed her
protest.
Our real estate dealers are giving large
chunks of climate, at a premium on the
sales they are making these days.
The carpet in the new city jail is all in
place, consisting of four inches of cement.
It will evidently last well.
It is expected that the legislature will
pass a banking law. which will require an
examination of state banks, similar to
national banks.
MAT BE LUCKY
The unlucky thirteen is most prominent
in a check found on the streets of the city
yesterday. '1 he check was No. 15; was
dated at North Powder, Oregon, Septem
ber 13th and the amount $13, payable to
Cyrus Perkins or bearer and signed by
Bridget Donehau. Of course any check
having such connection with the julucky
number was lost. If any one can prove
without the shidow of a douht that he is
Cyrus Perkins he may have the check by
calling at the Chronicle office, otherwise
thirteen may prove a lucky number for
bearer. The Dalles Chronicle.
