SCANDAL IN GRAIN BAGS
Walla Walla. Wash.. Oct. 20. -One of
the important questions taken up by the
siate hoard of control on its recent visit
to the penitentiary was an investigation
into ine charges that the distribution of
penitentiary grain bass has been imDron-
erly made, and that a large number were
procured in various parts of the state for
speculative purposes.
The board went into the matter thor
oughly, and it is said that some startling
disclosures were made. Among other
things it is found that the form of appli
cation eul uui by Warden Kees to be
filled out by farmers applying for grain
bags has been changed from the form pre
scribed by the board and used in nraviou
years, without its knowledge. Tribune.
LOWER LIMB CUT BY FALL
Mrs. Wood, mother of Mrs. Link, fell,
while on her way to the depot at Baker
City, last Friday night, and sustained a
severe cut on one of her lower limbs
which necessitated a number, of stitches
by Drs. May and Francis on Saturday
She has, however, been getting on as
well as could be expected since. The
place where she fell is a dangerous point
at best, for people on foot, who travel the
highway to he depot, especially by night
when the electric lights are not giving
good service. The cut was evidently sus
tained from contact with glass or some
other sharp - edged substance. Haines

AS OLD ASTHE HILLS
His amusing to hear the Portland and
Baker City dailies and other papers rave
about the high mountain peak, which was
recently discovered by a surveyor. The
papors state that it is higher than Mt.
Hood and call the new peak Mt. Eagle.
Columns have been devoted to the new
find and Mt. Hood has slid into the back
ground of insignificance. It is amusing
from tne fact that the people of Wallowa
and Union counties have known of this
mountain for years.
In Wallewa county and Elgin, Eagle
Cap, which name was given the mountain

Tha Central Railroad people have steel
"to burn" this week and the work of
laying tha sama will proceed vigorously.
They now have the material and a goodly
force of men, so it is fair to presume that
there will ba something doing in the rail

ROUTE OF THE NORTHWESTERN
Tha Northwestern Railroad company
has filed a certified copy of its srticles of
incorporation at Boise, Idaho.
They sat forth that the purpose of the
company is "to construct, equip, main
tain and operate a line of railroad and
telegraph and telephone lines on such
route as the company may select, from
a point on the Oregon Short Line railway
between tha towns of Hunington in Baker
county, Ore., and the first crossing of
Snake river, east of said town of Hun
ington, at or near a place called Eagle,
and extending thence in a general nor
therly direction along or near the Snake
river to a point at or near the town of
Lewiston, in tha state of Idaho, a dis
tance of 1 50 miles, mora or less, extend
ing a portion of said distance on. the Ore
gon side of said river and the remaining
portion on the Idaho side thereof, and
crossing the river at such places as shall
hereafter ba selected; as to construct,
purchase, maintain and operate teamboats
snd water craft upon the Snake river
for tha carriage of freight, passengers,
