"Take this horrid kitten out of my cell,
it is eating all my little mice." So spoke
Bernice Lockhart alias "Touch 'Em Sally"
when Deputy Sheriff Johnson last evening
opened the porta! leading to the bastile
where lies the morphine saturated speak
er. As the deputy approached her cell
she turned upon him a pair of glassy eyes,
colored with precious little intellectual
light, that spoke even more beseechingly
than did the verbal appeal. Mr. Johnson
quietly informed her that the cat's pres
ence was made necessary for the very
reason that mice were accumulating and
must be gotten rid of. During the brief
reply of the deputy her fingers twitched
and twined nervously about the cut covers
as though they were straining their high
est sense of touch to locatt a pill contain
ing "dope," and aftei pondering the reply
for a minute, she dropped her cloggy head
to the pillow, seemingly still unsttisfied as
to the reason why mice should be so
mercilessly massacred.
The dialogue would naturally provoke a
laugh because of the utter absurdity of
the request. Rather than that it illus
trated what Uend the mind takes when
unoccupied. For weeks this woman has
lain on that cot with nothing to divert her

Miss Nina Hunstock wishes tonnnou.-rs
to the ladies of La Grande that she is
with meoared to take orders and give lessons
pnmo otner man tnese little mice in ques
tion. The glittering eye. the hasty scram
ble across the cell, the occasional nibble
at a piece of cloth by her tiny so-called
friends, have served to pass many a lone
ly minute for her. As her stay in the cell
continued, she grew even more fond of
her little visitors and now she reserves a
crumb or two of her daily rations for Mr.
Mouse, with the advent of the cat, .the
mouse has "Skidooed" and kitty takes it
place, were her stay in Union county's
jail not so near an end. due to the fact
that she will soon be incarcerated in the
state prison, she would no doubt soon
form an .ntimate liking for the less ob
noxicus animal, the cat.
