Mrs. Lena Letts, living with her father
and mother, her two children and her
sister, Miss Adele Pfeffele. at 626 San
Pedro street, has asked Protecting At
torney Quy Eddie for protection from her
husband who, she said, the fears is trying
to kidnap her boy. D. M. Letts, Jr.
Letts uvea at 614 Rrth avenue, and
until last Monday the others of the family
resided there also. On last Sunday, it is
alleged by Mrs. Letts and her sister,
misunderstandings between the couple
which had already caused two separa
tions culminated in personal violence,
when Letts is said by both Mrs. Letts
and her sister, to have chocked Miss
Pfeffele, thrown his wife to the flnor and
was only stopped when Miss Pfeffele
CDvered him witn a revolver, and drove
him out of the house.
"My husband deserted me when 1 was
ill and in a destitute condition," Mrs.
Letts told attorney Eddie, "and had il
not been for $20 given me by the city
Council of La Grande, Ore., and other as
sistance tendered me by total strangers,
my children and myself would have starv
ed. In spite of this he persuaded me
again to live wan him and at once be
gan his ill-treatment. The result is the
present trouble end had it not been for
my sister 1 should have been a tola
wreck. As it is, 1 am nervous and
frightened because I know he is trying
to kidnap my boy and just as soon as the
money can be secured 1 shall institute
divorce proceedings." '
I Miss Pfeffele does not appear to be a
day over 18, yet is the present sole sup
nort of the m people, bearing her hur
den with a light heart, but still finding
time to protect her nephew, ,
"I will protect my sister and nephew
to the end," she said last night, ''and if
Dave Letts tries to molest her or get the
boy 1 will kill him, as I told the prosecut
ing attorney 1 would."
Prosecuting attorney Eddie has the
matter under advisement and will take
some steps in the matter within a day
or two.
RESOLUTION
Beit resolved: That a seven foot side
walk, according to specifications provided
by ordinance, be constructed along the
North side of Greenwood Street from its
intersection with Monroe Avenue to its
intersection with R Street, and along R
Street, East along lots numbered 22, 21,
20, 19 and 18, in Block 148, of Champ
la ins Addition to La Grande.
The Recorder is hereby directed to give
the necessary notice to all property own
ers abutting said proposed improvement
that unless said side-walks are construct
ed within ten days from and after the
date of such notice the same will be built
by the City, and the expense and costs
of the same made a lien against such
abutting property.
