AMUSEMENT
A fair sized house greeted Miss Jane
Corcoran and Mr. Brophy and patiently
waited for them to finish the three acts
of "The Freedom of Suzanne." There is
no question but that both Miss Corcoran
and Mr. Brophy are actors far above the
average, but the piece is too trivial for
serious consideration at the hands of two
so accomplished and intelligent artists. It
is true that there are passages in the
play which are truly amusing and others
which require real ability, but the con
ception of the piece is not in accordance
to human nature or even ordinary com
mon sense.
A MAD LOVE
Manager Edward R. Salter has found a
new emotional actress, Miss Maretta
Smart, who gives promise of becoming
one of the foremost of leading women.
She will appear here in "A Mad Love" a
modern re-adaptation of Miss M. E. Brad
don's famous work which both as a novel
and play bore the title of "Lady Audley's
Secret," and for a score of years has been
played and read throughout the world,
having been translated into every known
language and is recorded in literary his
tory as one of the genuine and permanent
successes, and will be presented at Stew
ard's opera house, Monday, Oct. 1 5. This
modern version is claimed to be an im
provement on the original in as much s
it has been brought up to meet the theat
ric dfimanH of the times. Beyond the
revision and with several added charact
ers, the brilliancy and interest of the or
iginal remains intact.

As the theatrical season has just open
ed here it would be well to call the
attention of the patrons of the opera
house to the fact that they can confer a
great favor upon the management also
the patrons by arriving at the theatie in
time to become seated before the curtain
goes up for the first act. Straggles not

Memphis, Tenn. Oct. 10 The brother
hood uf St Andrew is holding its ninth
annual international convention in this
city, commencing today, and continuing
until the 2 1st Robert H. Gardinier,
President, called the convention to order,
and delivered his annual address. The
treasurer and Secretary read their an
nual reports. The assemblies of Illinois,
Indiana, and Ohio ware also represented.
The attendance is large, and embraces
prominent Sons of St. Andrew from all
portions of the Union.
RESOLUTION
Beit resolved: That seven foot side
walk, according to specifications provided
by ordinance, be constructed along the
North side of Greenwood Street from its
intersection with Monroe Avenue to its
intersection with R Street, and along R
Street, East along lots numbered 22, 21.

lains Addition to La Grande.
The Recorder is hereby directed to give
the necessary notice to all property own
ers abutting said proposed improvement
that unless said side-walks are construct
ed within ten days from and after the
date of such notice the same will be built
