Carbine, secretary 1 of the Grande Ronde Fruitgrowers' union of La Grande, arrived with large dis play of fall and winter apples from that vicinity. The unnn has made a specie ty of inspecting, grading and packing fruit and offers for sale targe quantities of first-cass apples and hopes to stimulate irtarest in the fruit -of Grande Ronde valley by making a creditable exhibit at this fair. Mr. Carbine is an enthusiastic fair man and believes in them from every viewpoint He also believes in the org anization of the fruitgrowers for mutual protection and assistance. The union in Grande Ronde valley has been the means of advancing the prices of fruit consider ably in that locality by enforcing the laws in regard to fruit inspection and by mak ing a specialty of grading and packing propeity for market He will remain in the city during the week and would be glad to meet the fruitmen of this and Morrow county. Beakley. of Portland, was killed yes terday, as a result of a barn door falling on him. The child's grandmother who, is quite old, ran to the nearest neighbor's to secure help. The exertion, together with the shock, proved too much for her, and she died a few hours later. CROP NAT ROT Benton county's prune crop may have to rot in the orchards, if pickers cannot be secured. Help is very scarce, and many of the orchards have ' not been touched yet. SHEEP SHIPMENT Last evening the Elgin-La Grande branch took thirteen cars of sheep out of Elgin to La Grande. From here they will be shipped to eastern markets. The sheep were raised in Wallowa county and represented a neat sum of money.
