WIOGLETERSLlTfrTMERALD
This morning D. Fitzgerald and Charles
Wiggles indulged in a lively dispute over
who owned the largest sunflower. After
a burlesque b.Utle of words, it was de
cided that both specimens should be
measured by an uninterested party. When
the stake had been properly posted and
due measurements taken, the judges de'
dared Fitzgerale the winner. The sun
flower growing in his yard measures 1 7
inches in diameter against that of Mr.
Wiggles' which had a diameter of 13
inches.
However, both are monsters and should
draw a prize at the coming county fair.

Last evenirg Constable Faulk rounded
up two boys, scarcely yet in their teens
and arraigned them before Justice Hough
The boys had stolen a valuable gun and
traded it for four pigeons.
The justice after closely questioning the

to return to school and "sin no more.
To say that the little fellows ben

to Flora to take up the church work in
the Methodist church of that village.
While in La Grande he visited with
Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Leffel. Mr. Leffel
and the reverend were boyhood friends,
and the few hours the pastor spent in
this city were taken up with reminiscence
of former days.
Rev. Kline is leaving a large church
field in Indiana but has decided that the
West is the place for him and accordingly
accepted the Flora charge.

and tried to kill her, d.ed yesterday in the

A NARROW ESCAPE
Tnis morning the fire department was
called out to quell a fire in tne barn of P.
J. Thieson. The barn is located directly
in the rear of of J. H. Steven's soda pop
factory and for some time it seemed im
possible to save Steven's property.
When Mrs. Thieson went to the barn
this morning she discovered the fire and
quickly notified the neighbors who turned
in an alarm. Even after the hose com
pany had strung the hose, thy were de
layed in getting water due to an over
thought. When the water was at last
turned on, it was seen that further loss
could be avoided.
In anticipation of a fire in ths soda pop
factory, Mr. Stevens with the assistance
of neighbors, carried much of the stock
and gas tanks to the street. While a
fire did start on the roof, it was ftopped
without damage to the factory itself. An
industrious stream from a garden hose
saved the Thieson residence until the de
partment arrived.
The barn was destroyed. However,
there was a small insurance which will
partially cover the loss. It seems very
probable that the fire originated from a
tramp's carelessness. The fire started in
the loft of the barn and the blaze can be
explained in no other way than as being
caused by a tramp, who after having
slept there during the night, had lighted a
pipe and carelessly ignited the hay.
