Sharpsburg. Md., September 17-The monument erected in memory of trie Third Fourth. Seventh and Eighth Reserves of Per.sylvama. who fell in the battle of Antietam will be unveiled this afternoon witn imposing ceremonies. The monu ment was erected by the State cf Penn sylvania and today was seiected for the dedication, as it is the forty-fourth anni versary of the buttle. The State of Penn sylvania provided free transportation to the bv.tlef.aid for the survivors of the regiments and several hundred cf the r availed themselves of ti e opportunity to visit again the scene of the that bloody battie mwmcn so many of the.r comrades feil. An interesting program has been arraiged for the exorcises and there wiil be several addresses by prominent speak ers, music and singing. The battle of Antietam was one of the most important c ts of the great war, ard proved to he the blood est. The battie wasthe result of an attempt of the confederates to capture the c;ty of Washingt'in. in the expectation that Maryland would thon join their cause and insure the final victory. The federal army was commanded by Gen. Qe'ofje B. McCe'ian. and the conferates by Gon. Ffobert E. Lee. On the I 7th the real battie wis bosun bv Hooker, wh rdrove back the left wing of the left win;; of the confederate; under Jack son, while Gen. Buroside engaged theh rght win;;. The battle ra;:ed arnurd a Con-ficd surrounded by woods, to w'veh Hooker had driven the enemy. The fed eral troops were twice repulsed, but named the position cn the third attack. Hooker was wounded, and the command feil to Gen. Sumner. Meanwhile on the extreme left Buroside had twice unsuc- cessludy tried to cross the A., but at '5 p m drove the enemy until a range cf mils occupied by batteries checked h m. At 4 o sloock he was ordered to take the position at any cost, and took the fir .t battery. But the arrival of gen. Hiil's divreMi strengthened the confederates, and Burnside reported that ha could rot hold h.s position if not insisted oy Mc Gielian with the federal reserve. Mc Ciullan did not need tus demand, and the federals were driven back to tne bridge. winch the confederates declined to attack. When darkness ended toe contest, trie federals had y lined tie nd vantages at most points, but not a dee ded success. Tne federal ioree numbered t!?.l64. and that on the other s'de it. is vanou-h, staled from 40. Odd to 90.000.
