N'no jurors were selected this morning
in the circuit court for the trial of Henry
Moody, charged with statutory rape,
when the entire pane! cf twenty-one jurors
was exhausted, and Sheriff Ed. Rand was
ordered to summon eight talesmen to be
present in court by 1 :30 o'clock to con
tinue the selection of the jury. The men
were all to be chosen from the body of
the country -not from town.
Moody is a prominent Eagle Valley
rancher, a son of George Washington
Moody, one of the pioneers in that country
The prosecuting witness is a girl twelve
years of aga at the time the alleged crime
Is said to have occurrd on February 1.
1 906. The charges preferred against
Moody created a profound sensation
because of the prominence of the parties
concerned and feeling in tne c?se, espec
ially in Eagle Valley runs very high.
The spirited con'.est over jurors this
morning portends a bitter fight in the trial
of the case. Eich juror summoned was
carefully examined by both defense and
the state as to his qualifications and where
over the slightest suggestion of that
which might influence a verdict was
shown the juror was promptly rejected.
Charles F. Hyde and J. M. Strayer are
defending Moody, and District Attorney
Lomax is being assisted by Judge T. H.
Crawford of La Grande in prosecuting
the case. -Baker City Herald.
