Crushed, torn and hacked beyond all resemhlance to human form, and strewn along the track for miles, seaichers yes terday found the body of Ed Welch, a roving miner from the Flagstaff mine, who in an effor to beat his way on an O. R.St N. train, met death Saturday night Pieces of the body were found Sunday morning by the crew of an eastbound freight which arrived here between 8 and 9 o'clock. Chief Jackson was notified and with Alf Currey acting as coroner in the absence of Dr. I son, a search was made for the remaining pieces of the dead man. Welch was killed near a crossing of the Haines road four mites north of town. Pieces of the body were found scattered long the track on this side of the cross ing to about half a mile north of it. These were picked up and brought to Baker by the searchers. One toe was found two miles and a quarter north of the crossing on the road to Haines. Welch had bee.i working in the Flag staff mine about three weeks. He was a tramp miner who had roamed all over the world, and after having tired of HEAuST PLACED (Srrlpps News Association) 1 New York, Sept., 11 The State Con vention of the Independence League will open at Carnegie Hall this afternoon and if every detail of the plans are carried out it will before adjourning nominate a full state ticket with William Hearst as candidate for the Governorship. There will be about 1,6000 delegates at the convent ion who were not elected at primaries, but appointed by the Independence League organizations in the various assembly district Therejwill be one delegate for every 1000 votes and major fraction there of, cast in the different assembly districts for the office of Governor in the last general election in 1 904. Hearst has completed control of the convention and it is a foregone conclusion that he will be nominated for Governor. It is practically assumed that Justice W. J. Gaynor will not be condidate against Hearst The state convention leaders know Justine Gaynor's position and have been informed that his name must not be used to obtain delegates to the convent ion. According to the program mapped out by Mr. Hearst the convention will nomi nate him for governor and at a subsequent mass meeting to be held at Madison Square Garden, the nomination is to be ratified and the nominee will formally ac cept the place at the head of the ticket and, incidentally, fire the first shot in his campaign, by delivering an address, fully explaining his position and the platform upon which he expects to be elected. Mr. Hearst and his counsellors had jud iciously selected the date of the Independ- 1887 LIABILITIES Capital Stock $100,000.00 Surplus 20.000.00 Undivided Profits 38,714.34 Circulation 60,000.00 Deposits Individual, $671,974.74 U. ' At the crossing near where the accident occured the trains slow up, because or' killing stock. Welch, riding the rods it is believed, had an insecure position, and as the train started to slow up attempted to change to one more safe. In some way he lost his hold and falling partially under the wheels was ground, bit by bit to pieces. Not a feature of the man remained when the body was picked op. There was no head, there was no face, nothing but shreds of grimy flesh, and chunks of dirt-covered muscle. The d,ead man was about 45 years of age. He was a native of Ireland but had traveled all over the world as an adven turous miner. He had mined in Africa, in Australia and in all the western states. Ae was identified through a card ha car ried introducing him to J. H. Connor, the Sumpter saloon man, the card being signed by G. C. Thomas. It was the only mark of identification on the body. On PEDESTAL ence League convention for a day one week ahead of the Democratic convention, hoping that the good showing made by Hearst in the Independence League con vention would impress the Democrats and make it easier for the Hnarst managers to stampsde the members into endorsing Hearst;s nomination for the governorship. It is announced that Hearst's platform, which also is the platform of the Inde pendence League stands for public own ership of such public utilities as under private ownership subject the people to incompetent service and increasing rob bery. It stands for antagonism to official and other corruption, grafting in every form, and fight to the bitter end against all trusts, political machines and boss rule. Max Ihmensen as president of the con vention of Independent league which met to nominate Hearst for Governor of New York, at noon named Hearst's name, after which there were several minutes of steady applause. Will Glenn was tem porary chairman and delivered an anti boss speech. The convention appointed committees and adjourned until tonight. FURNISHED ROOMS-Inquire at this office. When Love sets his arrrow in a wom an's heart and she turns and follows, seeking healing of her hurt, could there be aucht nailder then that she should be led by very Love Into the ambush where Death, arrow on string, waits to plant his deadly shaft in her breast? Yet so it is. Time and again Love proves to be Death's decoy. Anil often when the grim archer fails to in flict mortal hurt, he leaves the suffering woman to creep through life like a broken-winged bird. Why does love lead to suffering? Many a woman has asked that question piteous! v and passionately. She has for saken father and mother to cleave unto her husband in the belief that so she wu achieving woman's highest happiness. But instead of happiness she has found misery, struggled with it until struggle seemed useless, and at last has come ti, accept her misery as the "cross" laid up on women who love and marry. There is no real reason why almost every wife and mother should riot enjov he in diseases which affect the delicate, womanly organism. Disagreeable drain sre carrying awav the vital force. In flammation has lighted its fire for slo torment. Ulceration is eating into the tender tissues. Female weakness in making life a daily martyrdom. Is it any wonder that the nerves are rocked, that appetite fails, and night, which should bring rest, brings only restless snd troubled dreams ? Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription cures the womanly diseases which undermine the general health- It dries the drains, puts out the fire of inflammation, henls the ulcerated tissues and cures female weakness. In a word, it makes weak women strong and sick women well. "Favorite Inscription" is a true tem perance medicine. It contains no alcohol, neither opium, cocaine, or other narcotic. Sick and ailing women are invited to consult Dr. Pierce by letter, free of charge. All correspondence strictly pri vate and sacredly confidential. In a little more than thirty years Dr. Pierce, assisted by his staff of nearly a score of physicians, has treated and cured over half a million women. Write, without fear or fee, to Dr. R. V.
