The seventeenth annual meeting of the
Grande Ronde Valley Agricultural Associ
ation will be held at La Grande, Sept. 25
to 29. There will be $1,600 disbursed
in premiums, and the race purses aggre
gate $4,500.
The event will be "bigger and better
than ever before," and will no doubt be
well attended.
Among the race features will be trott
ing races, running races, cowboy relay
races and ladies' reUy races.

John Sharp Williams, the minority
leader of the house, has as usual a knife
up his sleeve for the "peerless" Bryan.
Williams is a plutocratic democrat, and is
personally a very wealthy man. He
opposes governmentownership of railroads
or anything else.
Cartoonist Morris of the Spokeman
Review, of Spokane. Wash., is justly re
garded as one of the leaders in his line in
America. His work is strikingly original
and in both ideas and execution is second
to none. Mr. Morris is a very young
man, several ytars this side of thirty.
La Grande's public schools showed an

stitutions in the state, and that
people in this city and valley are
begininngtodiscover the advantage
of this school. The system is the
latest and most practical, and in
cludes all the latest discoveries in
the art of teaching music. The
school is divided into two depart
ments; No. 1 is for beginners from
5 years or more and are taught
the first three grades. Pupils come
one hour each day. This is no kin
dergarten system but far superior.
In No. 2 the grades are from 3 to
15. Here they graduate. Pupils
take one or two lessons a week as
they desire. No scholars will be
permitted to remain in this school
who do not study.
